CAC May Be Forced to Sack Flag Football

Unless a volunteer commissioner steps forward, the youth program may not exist in 2011.

Parents who wanted to sign their children up to play flag football for the Crofton Athletic Council (CAC) are scrambling to find other options.

The program, at its peak, enrolled approximately 100-115 children aged 5-8, said former CAC flag football commissioner Bill Frey. Enrollment in the 7- and 8-year-old categories has been dropping, and last year approximately 50 children participated.

Frey was commissioner for three years, but his children are now older and he is pursuing other activities.

“Volunteers are the engine on which the organization runs,” Frey said. Unfortunately, no one has stepped forward to run the flag football program for 2011.

I give a lot of credit to the volunteers that run CAC, said Fern Kucinski. Her son played flag football for CAC last year and “loved it,” she said. My kids have played many sports with CAC and my husband is a coach, Kucinski said. CAC would be our first choice for flag and I’ll be disappointed if it isn’t offered this year, she said.

However, with registration deadlines looming, parents are looking elsewhere. To avoid late fees, parents must register for Davidsonville flag football by July 30. The Gambrills-Odenton Recreation Council (GORC) is still accepting flag registrations, but is already in its late registration period.

Unless something happens in the next day or so, I’m going to register my son in a neighboring league, Kucinski said.

Beverly Woods ended up signing her 5-year-old son up with GORC. “I’m disappointed because I wanted to stay red,” Woods said referring to the Crofton Cardinal’s team colors.

“I grew up in Crofton so cheering for GORC is going to be crazy,” she said.

The CAC Board has a great interest in the flag football program and supports it, but they rely on volunteers, Frey said. Absent an individual willing to head things up, the Board’s hands are essentially tied, he said.

CAC can still pull together a season if someone steps forward, Frey said. Being commissioner “is not nearly as daunting as it seems, after the initial set-up everything basically runs itself,” he said. “It’s only about four hours a week, maybe a little more in the beginning,” he said. “I’ll do anything I can to help a new commissioner,” Frey said.
