Pitching gives up just two hits in four games; offense produces 36 runs in the wins

The Crofton 10-under softball team did just about everything right at last weekend’s CML Tournament up in Hampstead.

The Stars won all four of their games and rolled to the tournament championship, capping it with a tough 2-1 victory over Olney in the title game onSunday.

This tournament had six teams—from Catonsville, Olney, Howard County, Westminster and Winfield, in addition to the Stars.

In the title game, Olney pushed across a run in the first inning and held that lead until the bottom of the fourth of the five-inning game. That’s when the top of the Crofton line-up made some noise.

Allison Page, Caroline Mills and Katy Conroy combined for a quick two-runrally. Page got a single, and Mills followed with a triple. Conroy then added a single for a second RBI.

Mills went the distance and didn’t allow a hit. She struck out 12 and walked four.

Pitching might have been the key for the Stars throughout this tournament as Crofton gave up just two hits in the four games – and then the offense pitched in to score a total of 36 runs.

The first game saw Crofton roll to a 14-0 victory over Winfield. Conroy drove in five runs, and Page knocked in four. Amanda Oyler and Mills combined for the no-hitter in that game. They also struck out a total of seven batters.

The following game wasn’t much different as Crofton routed Catonsville, 12-1. Emma Ruberg went the distance and gave up just one hit in her four innings. She also struck out nine batters.

Game three saw more of the same. Crofton didn’t have much trouble inits first meeting with Olney, rolling to an 8-1 victory.

Oyler and Ruberg combined on a one-hitter as the Stars rolled on into the final round and a rematch with Olney.
