Crofton Boys Win In County Midget Lacrosse Tournament

Crofton team, coached by William Huggins, beats other Crofton team for the title

The Midget boys division of the recent county lacrosse tournament certainly had a Crofton feel to it.

The reason—Crofton’s team that was coached by William Huggins scored a 4-2 victory over coach Jonathan Hill’s Crofton squad in that division’s championship game. Two Crofton teams made the final in the 12-team tournament.

That victory let the Crofton squad finish the season with a 13-2 record. Huggins’ team bounced back from a tough overtime loss in the final game of the regular season to play well in the tournament.

“That seemed to really pull the team together and make them stronger,” said Huggins.

In the title game, Danny Policelli scored two goals. Sungha Cho added a goal and an assist. Jordan Carter scored the other goal. Andrew Wick also had an assist.

This Crofton team did a good job of controlling the ball and the tempo of the game, one reason that the score might have been low. But Huggins said this was part of their plan coming into the title match-up.

"Our game plan was to control the ball, control the clock and make the most of every possession,” he said. “Once we had the ball in our offensive set, the boys did an outstanding job of passing and catching, staying patient and waiting for high-percentage shots.”

Huggins gave credit to William Garey and Jordan McClung for good work on face-offs plus Collin Quinn and Matt Rand on winning ground balls and getting the offense moving.

The defense also proved to be a key during the playoffs. Crofton’s defense allowed just two goals in each of the three playoff games, taking pressure off of the offense. Huggins said that Justin Thomas, Will Rupard, Brandon Kirk, Patrick Bevan and Noah Reed all sparked the defense.

Goalie Greg Spencer anchored the defense throughout the season. He made a number of tough saves in the final and was strong throughout the season.

Here’s a list of the rest of the championship team: Paul McGinley, Noah Lincoln, Zachary Kittleson, William Debus, Justin Thomas, Alec Vigil, Brandon Beauchamp, Malik Robinson, Tommy Williams and Satchel Pickett, Chris Kolakowski and Mike Sullivan served as assistant coaches.
