Crofton Stars 10-U Softball Wins Central Md. Tournament

Stars finish summer tournaments with big wins in Carroll County competition

In some ways, the Crofton Stars 10-and-under softball team had some bad luck at last weekend’s Central Maryland League tournament in Carroll County.

Teams must do a coin flip in these kinds of competitions to determine who is the home team, something most want since they get the final at-bat. But the Stars lost all five coin flips. However, they won everything else.

The Stars got their bats out last weekend, averaging over nine runs per game and easily rolling to the tournament title in the final competition this summer.

The Stars had about 12 girls in the tournament last weekend, missing some people because of vacations. But they were able to play solid softball, getting good hitting and strong pitching. They got help from a number of players who pitched well and others who hit nicely also.

Crofton first had a tough game, edging the LT Lazers, 6-5. After that, the Stars rolled to an 8-0 victory over the Winfield Sting. Following that, the Stars breezed to an 11-0 victory over the Westminster Rockets.

Crofton then topped the Freedom (Carroll County), 11-6, in the tournament semifinal. The Stars then easily beat the Olney Cougars, 12-4, in the championship game.

The Stars never trailed in any game during the five contests in this tournament.

Offense was the big thing in this tournament. The Stars finished with 48 runs and 52 hits in this competition—and they got plenty of help from plenty of places.

Allison Page played a big role, getting 11 hits in 15 at-bats, including two home runs. Katy Conroy (8-for-13) and Alex Robinson (8-for-14) also helped out.

In addition, Mackenzie Meehan and Taylor Conley each added seven hits. Meehan was 7-for-11 while Conley up 7-for-14. Caroline Giordano also helped; she was 6-for-13.

But consistent pitching proved even more crucial. Caitlyn Houch won both games she pitched in and finished with a total of 17 strikeouts. Maddy Miller threw a shutout in the only game she tossed.

Emma Ruberg also won two games, winning twice, the final one being the championship match-up against Olney. She ended up with a total of 20 strikeouts.
