Crofton Stars Gear Up for Softball Season

Girls softball squad adds to Crofton's travel team possibilities.

The weather’s getting warmer, and now it’s time for softball once again.

Crofton is going to have two kinds of softball teams this spring. One group is going to play in the North County Community Girls Softball League (NCCGSL).  That’s called the recreation league, but there’s also going to be two travel teams this season.

The travel teams, called the “Crofton Stars,” will be in the 10 and under and 12 and under age groups. This will be the first time Crofton’s been able to have more than one travel team.

Lisa Mills is the 10 and under team coach. She said her team’s been practicing indoors throughout the winter and recently moved outside. They will play in six tournaments this spring. Their first appearance will be April 9-10 in Glen Burnie or Laurel.

Mills said the early practices have looked good, and she wants the team to play at a higher level than last year. Her team participated in the “C level” tournaments last spring, but will go against tougher competition this year. Mills said she hopes they’ll find plenty of success.

“They look great,” Mills said. “They’re fast, and they’re not afraid of fast pitching. They love [to hit] fast pitching.”

Mills said they’re already coming together as a team, which is important in children’s sports.

“They enjoy each other a lot,” she said. “They’re already a team,” Mills added.

Kevin Mahoney is going to coach the 12 and under team. They’re going to play in eight tournaments. The team’s first tournament will be in Glen Burnie April 9-10. Both of the Crofton Stars’ teams keep busy during the season, practicing three times a week to stay ready for the upcoming tournaments.

The recreation league will start the week after the Crofton Stars begin on April 16. Girls ages 4-19 are eligible to play in this league and younger teams (4-9) are going to play through the first weekend of June.

Teams ages 10 and up are scheduled to keep going after that, starting a two-weekend double-elimination tournament which runs through Father’s Day.
