Crofton Youth Football Practice Starts Soon

Team practices to start in July; regular season begins in late August

It’s the middle of the summer, and the weather is perfect for baseball, but children in Crofton are definitely getting ready for football.

The reason is that Anne Arundel County’s youth football leagues will soon begin summer practices for this fall’s season. Teams who play in the Anne Arundel Youth Football Association can start practice on July 18 for the season that starts in late August.

County teams can begin practice on that date. Most Crofton teams appear as if they won’t start workouts until a few days after that.

The county lets summer football practices take place Monday through Friday nights from 6-8. They’ll often do this right up until when school begins, and that’s when workouts drop to three nights per week. The Crofton program will practice at Cardinal Field, on Underwood Road.

Ron Rosati will be coaching Crofton’s 12-and-under team and said the summer practices help kids who know about the game learn more and those who are inexperienced understand the basics.

“It’s very important because we’ll have a mixture of kids that haven’t played before,” Rosati said. “You can’t go back and pick up where you left off. You have to start at the beginning every season.”

Rosati’s been coaching for about 10 years and continues to do so even though he doesn’t have a kid on the team. He’s looking forward to the start of practice also.

“I don’t know about the kids, but I’m very excited,” he said with a laugh. “I enjoy coaching. It’s an opportunity to watch the kids enjoy a sport that I love.”

The teams will play 9-10 games per season. The regular season is scheduled to end on Oct. 22 with the playoffs starting the week after.

There will be three divisions. The Division II and III championship games are set for Nov. 12—with Division I’s title game on the 19th.
