Girls Seahawks Remain Unbeaten in County Basketball

Coach wants the South River girls team to focus on improving their game despite recent win. Poor defense led to boys basketball loss.

Despite a 59 to 17 home thumping of the Glen Burnie Gophers and running their record to 6-3 (6-0 in the county) last night's girls varsity basketball game was a sloppy and uninspired effort by the Seahawks.

"We lacked a lot of effort," said head South River girls coach Mike Zivic. "We didn't play our style of basketball."

Zivic could be heard in the stands saying, "We're flat," and soon called a time out with 5:08 remaining in the first quarter to verbally lash his team, up just 6 to 4.

Senior Kailee Knight (five points, five rebounds, two blocks) came off the bench and immediately went to the foul line to hit one of two shots. Then junior Domonique Hagins (10 points) drained a three-pointer to extend the lead to 12-to-6.

Knight hit the next bucket at the top of the key and was followed by Aleeyah Hopkins' (14 points, five rebounds, two steals) offensive rebound turned lay-up. Junior Marissa Carroll (five points) added a 12-ft jumper to extend the margin to 18-6 before the Gophers finally scored again to end the first quarter scoring at 18-8.

Then the defense was turned up big time. The Seahawks allowed just five second-quarter points, only two free throws in the third quarter and a minuscule two points in the final quarter.

"We're not here to embarrass teams," said Zivic. "We'll hold up on some scoring, but we're not going to give up on defense. We will keep them from scoring."

But his team's lackluster start and inconsistent offensive play concerned Zivic.

"We didn't have that killer instinct. It shouldn't matter who we're playing. We've got to get over that mentality if they are going to go where they want to go."

At 6-0 in county play, the Seahawks are certainly moving toward playing for a county championship later this season, but don't tell Zivic that.

"There's a long way to go," Zivic said. "A long way to go."

Eight players scored for the Seahawks including starting sophomore guard Bre Bolden who added 11-points to go with three steals and a rebound. Sophomore Tiffany McKinney and senior Allie Martin scored six-points, while junior Melanie Long netted two points.

The Gopher's were led in scoring by junior Mia Carr (six points).
