Kickball Spring League Interest Steps Up

Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks spring league begins Friday April 1st at the Bell Branch Athletic Complex.

There are so many sports gaining popularity among adults across the United States and in this area. Soccer and softball are two of them. But there’s another one that many people probably haven’t thought about since days on the playground in elementary school.

Kickball is a sport that many people had forgotten about. But a whole lot of adults are remembering it again.

Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks began a kickball league in the fall, and its popularity pushed the start of a spring league, which is going to begin Friday April 1 at the Bell Branch Athletic Complex.

Steve Conyers, program coordinator, said when they began the league in the fall, they were able to get about 150 people involved – 10 teams with about 15 people on each. That’s where the idea for a spring program formed.

“It’s probably one of the largest-growing adult sports in the country,” Conyers said. “You don’t have to be a jock. Everyone knows how to play kickball.”

The league is for adults ages 18 and up and will have games every Friday from 6-10 p.m. over a seven-week period. The games are played just like softball—six innings or 45 minutes, whichever comes first.

There’s a pitcher and a catcher. Each team gets three outs per inning. Plus, it’s coed so both men and women are on the field. Conyers said the innings and games move quickly.

“We didn’t have one game that didn’t get completed last fall,” he said.

The sport is growing throughout the country. Conyers has friends in San Diego and Denver, who said there are more than 300 kickball teams in each city. In addition, Conyers said there are about 150-200 teams in Baltimore City. There’s also a very popular league in Bowie, and that’s something the Recreation and Parks officials noticed.

Conyers said while the teams like to win, they also enjoy just chilling out.

They bring grills, make food, sit around and talk and even go out to relax after the game. There’s competition but also some fun.

“It’s just a good Friday night way to let your hair down,” Conyers said.
