Lady Seahawks Ousted By Severna Park, 12-6

Marissa Carroll's three goals are not enough, as Severna Park eliminates South River from the state playoffs.

The playoff run for the South River girls lacrosse team ended on Monday, as the Lady Seahawks fell to Severna Park, 12-6.

The Lady Seahawks were hurt by a lack of possession, as they were forced to play catch-up for the whole game.

"We were playing way too much defense. You can't play that much defense, you get worn down. We had a plan and it wasn't executed," South River head coach Kim McNemar said.

Severna Park's Madison Thomas got things started, finishing a shot past goalie Kelsea Donnelly after two and a half minutes of play. Donnelly finished with 11 saves.

The Falcons looked poised to run away with the game when Thomas's second score brought the score to 6-1 at the 7:19 mark. Severna Park dominated possession in the first half, never allowing South River to gather any momentum.

"Those girls really wanted it," Severna Park coach Carin Peterson said. "They really did a nice job on that draw control and ground balls."

Marissa Carroll reduced the lead to three, scoring from the free position and then again three seconds before the half. The Lady Seahawks trailed 6-3 at halftime.

"The problem was the possession, ground balls and we got too many fouls. It was just ridiculous," McNemar said.

Goals from Ally Adams and Elizabeth Barranco returned the Falcon lead to five, as the second half got under way.

The Seahawk's Jacky Spalding and Amberly Kovalick responded to the Severna Park goals with tallies of their own, as the score sat at 8-5, with 14:29 to play.

Thomas's third score, on a pass from Kendyl Gardner, sparked a 3-0 run by the Lady Falcons. Gardner and Rachel Mia, with her second on the afternoon, would add goals to give Severna Park the 11-5 advantage.

"We didn't play with a lot of heart,"McNemar said. "We just weren't disciplined, that was really what it was."

With 2:33 to play, Carroll notched her third score only to see sophomore Morgan Torggler match her effort, as Severna Park finished 12-6 victors.

Coach McNemar was very thankful for her seniors afterward.

"They're amazing. I'm going to miss them so much," she said.
