Noted Concussion Expert to Speak at County Sports Clinic

Chris Nowinski, who has studied the long-term effects of concussion on the brain, will be the keynote speaker at Anne Arundel County Parks and Recreation Coach Certification Clinic.

A man who has gained national recognition for his research into sports and concussions will speak at an upcoming clinic for those looking to coach in the county. 

Chris Nowinski, founder of the Boston-based Sports Legacy Institute, will be the keynote speaker at the certification clinic mandated by the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks. 

The session will take place at 6 p.m. on August 28 at Old Mill High School. 

Nowinski founded the Sports Legacy Institute with concussion expert Dr. Robert Cantu to advocate for ways to plays sports more safely. 

SLI also partnered with the Boston University School of Medicine to form the Center for Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy. 

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy has shown to appear in former NFL players and other athletes suspected of sustaining multiple concussions during the careers. More than 30 NFL players have been diagnosed after death with the condition, including former San Diego Charger Junior Seau and Cincinnati Bengal Chris Henry.
