Seahawks Soccer Swept By Broadneck

The Lady Seahawks fell, 2-1, in sudden death extra time. The South River boys conceded two second-half goals to lose 2-0 to Broadneck. South River hosts North County High School on Tuesday.

GIRLS - The South River girl's soccer team (1-1) dropped a tough decision on Thursday, falling 2-1 to Broadneck (2-0) in extra time.

Trailing going into the later stages of the game, the host Seahawks were given new life when junior Dannie Stith struck a 25-yard shot into the net to tie the game at one.

Broadneck's Arden Smith would steal the show in extra time with a similar strike. The first extra-time period was nearing completion when Smith's right-footed blast from atop the box sealed the win for the visiting Bruins.

"Those are two sophomores that scored goals and we're very happy about that," Broadneck coach John Camm said. Smith and Broadneck's first goal scorer, Emily Barton, are both just sophomores.

The Seahawks controlled early portions of the game. A hand ball inside the six-yard box by South River halted a possible score. Madison Koenig then found freshman Alyssa Hill open at the top of the box, but her attempt was wide to the left.

"I thought the first 15 minutes we definitely controlled the play, but then Broadneck's physicality and passion for the ball came through," South River coach John Sis said.

The Lady Bruins would strike first when Smith flicked a throw-in behind her to the near post for Barton to pounce on. The sophomore midfielder placed her shot back low across the goal and passed goal keeper Emily Carter, for the 1-0 lead.

"The goalie was going to the near post, but then I hit it to the far post and it went in," Carter said.

Two minutes and twenty seconds into the second half, Broadneck almost doubled their efforts, when junior Emily Lord played Rachel Maxwell down the right flank. A swift move by Maxwell past her defender freed the freshman midfielder, but her resulting shot clanged off the post.

The Seahawks would not go down quietly though. A beautiful 25-yard strike by Dannie Stith equalized for the hosts.

"Dannie Stith, an amazing junior," Sis said. "We were very happy for her to get that. Obviously, we would have loved to made it worth while in the end."

The game was suddenly up for grabs again, with 14 minutes left to play. Each side frantically did what it could to steal a late victory, but the game ultimately would need to be decided in extra time.

With under two minutes remaining in the first extra-time period, Smith checked in, looking to make something happen.

A long pass ahead to Lord was secured, as the Lady Bruins had a two-on-one situation in their favor. Lord dropped a pass off to her left and perfectly to the right foot of Smith.

"I'm really strong with my right foot," Smith said. "I just have to thank Emily for laying me a good pass or I wouldn't have gotten a clean in without it."

The Lady Bruins stormed the field to celebrate the victory.

"Overall, not bad for the second game of the season," Sis said.

BOYS - The South River boy's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Broadneck on Thursday, conceding twice in the second-half to the visitors.

Broadneck's stout defense kept the Seahawks in check for most of the game, as South River was limited in its quality goal-scoring opportunities.

"They're typically strong in the back [and] in the middle," South River coach Jeff Vincent said about Broadneck's defense.

The Bruins (2-2) looked like they might tally early after drawing a corner kick. Junior Luke Dellorso saw his corner kick make its way back to him, he then snuck a pass into Barret, but the striker couldn't finish in front of goal.

"I thought we played really hard tonight," Broadneck coach Sean Tettemer said. "I thought we did a good job of trying to implement the things we've worked on in practice. I was real pleased with that."

South River's best look of the night came nine minutes into the match. Dale Appleman found himself open at the top of the box, he fired a low, hard shot toward goal, but it was wide right of the goal.

"First half I thought was somewhat even," Vincent said. "They kind of jumped on us in the second half and kept the pressure on us."

Broadneck's offensive struggles disappeared in the second half.

Tireless senior David Keen raced down the left wing, sending a pass to Barret, who managed to convert the first goal of the evening.

"Dave made a nice move, cut it in there, which is what we've been working on all along," Barret said. "Coach always told us to go back post, and that's all I was thinking. I got there and [he] played a beautiful ball and I one-touched it in the corner."

It was similar picture when the Bruins tacked on another score.

Keen whipped a pass into the box. After taking a deflection, the ball fell to McGeehan, who was there to finish the job.

"Dave beat a guy on the sideline, [his pass] came across, it got deflected and I was just standing there and it came right to me," McGeehan said.

It was a matter of right place, right time for the sophomore, McGeehan.

"We were able to get really quality serves in the second half," Tettemer said. "I think that's probably the difference."

South River could have pulled one back with nine minutes left in the game. The Seahawks earned a free kick just outside the box and senior Evan Young struck a solid kick, but it was left of the goal frame.

"They outplayed us in the second half," coach Vincent plainly stated after the game.
