South River Baseball and Softball Playoff Brackets are Out

South River boys get a bye in the first round of play; girls face off against Glen Burnie on Monday.

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association released the brackets for boys high school baseball and girls high school softball this week. All schools in Maryland are divided by size into four divisions: 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A. South River High School plays 4A ball in the east division. 

Each regional division hosts playoffs on their home fields at the local schools. The winners of those playoffs in each regional division face off on May 24 at the regional semifinals at the University of Maryland. West plays East, and North plays South. The winner of those games face off for the state final.

Boys

South River, seeded third, got a bye in the first round of the playoffs and on May 18 will face the winner of the Broadneck (sixth seed) vs. Annapolis (11th seed) game.

The Seahawks beat both Broadneck and Annapolis when the teams met during regular season play. On April 15, the South River vs. Annapolis game gave the Seahawks a 27 to 2 win. Later in the season, when the Seahawks met Annapolis in May, they won 17 to 3.

They beat Broadneck in two matchups during regular season, most recently on May 9, Seahawks won 3 to 2. They also won 8 to 3 in their April game.

Teams to watch in the East division on the boys side might include Chesapeake (first seed), last year's state champion, and North Point (second seed).

The boys state finals game will be played at the University of Maryland on May 27.

Girls

South River, seeded sixth in the East division, will play Glen Burnie (11th seed) on Monday. The winner of that game will play North County (3rd seed). North County got a bye in the first round of the tournament.

In the Lady Seahawks' only matchup this season against Glen Burnie, the opponent won, 17 to 1.

The South River vs. Glen Burnie playoff game will be played at South River on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

In the East division, teams to beat might include Broadneck (second seed), which beat South River earlier this week, 14-2, and Chesapeake (first seed), who bested the Seahawks in regular season play in March, 10-1.

In softball, Broadneck won the state championship two out of the last three years.

Regional semifinals will be played on Wednesday, May 18.

The girls state finals game will be played at the University of Maryland on May 28.
