South River Beats Broadneck in First Round Playoffs

Hard fought game ended in sudden death overtime, 6 to 5.

South River High boys lacrosse met Broadneck in Edgewater Thursday evening for a hard-fought state playoff game that left the Bruins bruised by a 6 to 5 victory by the Seahawks.

In Pasadena, the Lady Seahawks lacrosse team visted Chesapeake High School for their first round state playoff game, and won 18 to 6.

On the home turf for the boys, there was big action at the beginning and the end of the game, with slower periods of play in the middle.

In the first quarter, seniors Antonio Mazio and James Mullis scored three for Broadneck while South River’s Dylan Luzia scored once. In the second, Joey Pappetti scored for South River.

The score at halftime was 3-2 for Broadneck.

When the boys met again on the field for the third quarter, neither side scored.

The big action came in the fourth quarter, with boy sides clearly hungry to add a win to their season record.

Three minutes into the fourth, Seahawks' Ben Chisholm scored and tied the score 3 to 3 with an assist from Shane Lee.

Within the next six minutes later, the Bruins’ Mazio added two to the scoreboard, bringing the game to 5-3 Bruins.

Those scoring opportunities for Broadneck left the Seahawks eager to exact revenge. With two minutes left in the fourth quarter, South River’s Shane Lee brought the score to 4 to 5 (Broadneck). Hard play continued. With 46 seconds until the end of the fourth quarter (and the game), Chisolm, with an assist from Dylan Luzia, scored again, bringing the score to five-all.

Lacrosse playoffs can't end in a tie, so the game went into sudden death overtime. Officials added four minutes to the clock, but the first team to score would be the winner.

Two minutes in, South River scored, ending the season for Broadneck.

The final: 6-5, South River.

Next up, South River will play Arundel at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Arundel High School in Gambrills.  Arundel beat North Point 18-0 on Thursday.

The girls will meet Huntington High School at Meade at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Lacrosse playoffs continue around the state, with semifinals slated for May 20 and finals set for May 24 and 25 at University of Mryland stadium in Baltimore.
