South River Fall Sports Previews

Field Hockey looks to remain on top while boys soccer looks to improve.

With school starting next week, Patch breaks down what to expect from South River's field hockey and boys soccer teams this season.

Field Hockey

Katie Corcoran enters her seventh year helming the South River field hockey program and follows a 2010 campaign in which her team went 15-2, losing 2-1 in the 4A East Region Finals to Severna Park.

The Seahawks lose All-County midfielder Courtney Thompson (UMBC) but return their two leading scorers in junior forwards Jennie Milligan (15 goals, 11 assists) and Abbey Lawrence (15 goals, nine assists).

Senior midfielder Stacey Mackintosh (11 goals, five assists, and four defensive saves) will help Milligan and Lawrence on attack. She will also bolster the defense, anchored by senior goalie Shannon Flanagan, who had 62 saves with only six goals allowed for an outstanding save percentage of 91. Junior Taylor Bresnahan (defense) will also help.

The team will play in Tier 1 of a three-tier new county system in which it will face rivals Broadneck and Severna Park twice this season. The Seahawks will face the Bruins away on Sept. 15 and home on Sept. 28, and take on the Falcons Oct. 5 before hosting them on Oct. 19.

The Seahawks will host the South River Invitational Tournament on Sept. 10 beginning at 10 a.m.

Boys Soccer

Jeff Vincent will oversee the soccer team for the fifth year and will try to improve upon an 8-7-1 mark from 2010. Vincent is excited about his depth and talent and feels he returns a good core of players, which saw nine sophomores play on the varsity team.

“We will be very competitive in the county once again this year,” said Vincent. “Our level of success will depend on the kids competing for positions and taking care of the little things.”

The team lost three defenders and one midfielder to graduation but returns seniors Dale Appleman (midfield), Phil Cocchiaro (midfield), Danny Davis (striker), Chad Moeslein (striker/defense), Evan Young (striker/defense), and juniors Noah Heller (goalie), Michael Lozano (midfield), John Randolph (defense), Kyle Reichard (midfield), Austin Alley (midfield) and Colin Alley (midfield).
