PHOTOS: County Libraries Celebrate Summer Reading with Baysox

Anne Arundel County Public Libraries recognized kids who participated in the summer reading program at Sunday’s Bowie Baysox game.

County kids who have participated in the Anne Arundel County Libraries Summer Reading Program enjoyed a night of baseball, fireworks and prizes Sunday as the Bowie Baysox recognized them for their summer reading successes.

Many kids from area libraries flocked to Sunday night’s Baysox game where they took part in a pre-game parade on the field and were congratulated for reading over the summer.

Representatives from Anne Arundel County Public Libraries also were on hand, giving out prizes and taking pictures of the kids participating in the event.

“The kids are pretty jazzed they get to run out on the field before the game and get a prize,” said library spokeswoman Laurie Hayes. “We have been working with the Baysox for about 10 years now and it has been a great partnership with us to recognize the kids.”

The Baysox gave each kid who participated in the Summer Reading Program a free ticket to Sunday’s game, and the child’s parents had the opportunity to purchase a discounted ticket.

If the free ticket wasn’t enough, the first 1,000 kids ages 3-14 to arrive at Sunday’s game received a copy of the  popular children’s book, Captain Underpants. Kids also received the chance to meet Captain Underpants at the game.

“It promotes reading when school is over and helps keep kids active over the summer,” said Baysox Marketing Director Brandon Kaiser. “We like to work with the community, and libraries are a big part of that. We also like to recognize kids that read over the summer and stay educated.”

After the pre-game parade, kids watched the game, visited the library table for prizes and got to enjoy a fireworks show at the end of the night.
