Countywide Bike Ride To Help Fight Cancer

A Crofton family is calling on Anne Arundel County cyclists to hit the road to help fight cancer.

Crofton’s Harry and Gina Telegadas are organizing the “Vera Madden Memorial Bike Ride.” The 20-mile bicycle trek along the Baltimore & Annapolis Trail is scheduled for Monday, July 11.

“We want to give back and let people know about the work the American Cancer Society does to help cancer research,” said Gina Telegadas. Her mother Vera Madden passed away around this time last year after a five-year bought with cancer. The ACS helped the family through this time. Gina said she hopes the ride will raise enough to give back to the organization that has given her family so much.

“All the proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society. They’ve done so much for us,” added Gina.

The Telegadas said the idea to organize the ride came from their son’s baseball program. The Potter Baseball Tour give youths from all over the Mid-Atlantic a chance to travel the eastern seaboard playing baseball and giving back through volunteerism. The memorial ride is part of the tour activities here in Anne Arundel County.

Gina Telegadas said there are already 15 riders from the Potter Baseball tour expected on July 11. The Telegadas expect 40 to 50 riders to participate and hope to raise $2,000 to $2,500 for the American Cancer Society.

Several Anne Arundel County businesses are donating to the ride.

Fuji Bike donated a mountain bike and The Bike Doctor Annapolis offered a gift card to be raffled off.

The Big Bean in Severna Park will set up a water station for cyclists.

Severna Park’s Pedal Pushers and Marley Station Mall in Glen Burnie are also giving for the event.

The ride begins and ends at Marley Station, where a cookout will await returning cyclists.
