Crofton Getting Set for 50th Anniversary

The town will celebrate a big milestone in 2014, and there are already events scheduled.

Crofton will turn 50 next year, and local residents are already working hard on celebration plans.

Volunteer organizers are planning a series of events from now through 2014, ranging from concerts, golf tournaments, food festivals and parades.

There are two unofficial kickoff events in September, including a free concert and cookout, and a fundraising golf tournament at Crofton Country Club.

On Sept. 6, residents are invited to the country club from 6-10 p.m. for a concert featuring local band Little Bird.

The club is also recruiting players for a modified scramble golf tournament on Sept. 16. Cost is $85 per player, and it includes an awards dinner and prizes. Sponsorships for the tournament are also available. (Applications are being accepted in person by the Crofton Country Club.)

Money from the golf tournament will help fund 50th Anniversary celebrations from now through 2014, including a possible health and fitness fair, winter festival, spring block part and expanded festivities during Halloween and Christmas time.

"We're just going to try and make some of these events bigger and better," said Heather Levow, the general manager of the Crofton Country Club, who also serves on the anniversary committee.

The 50th Anniversary celebration will culminate in October of 2014 with a three-day"Homecoming Weekend" bash.
