POLL: Arundel vs. South River Boys' Lacrosse, Who Will Win?

Arundel and South River will square off in boys lacrosse Wednesday night.

It appeared unlikely that Arundel High and South River would get another crack at each other when the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association boys' 4A lacrosse bracket came out last week. On Wednesday night, the Wildcats and Seahawks will get their chance. With a trip to the state semi-finals on the line, local rivals, Arundel and South River High will face off at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Joe Pappetti Field in Edgewater. The Seahawks defeated Arundel in last year's playoffs and edged the Wildcats during regular season play in April. South River are the reigning state runners up in boys' lacrosse. Crofton will proudly be represented with students from both schools, as some of Anne Arundel county's best athletes take the lacrosse …

LETTER: Apology from District 1 Councilman Peter Smith

In a letter to the editor, the councilman from Severn said he is hopeful that the council will hold itself to a higher standard.

Anne Arundel County, The last few months have been very trying for me. In the few short weeks I have been appointed to this seat, many of you have reached out to me and expressed your displeasure of the current state the leadership in our county has created.  If you have not been told, I want to officially apologize for our behavior. We are not perfect and we will stumble and like any steadfast servant, we will rise and continue to travel in the direction to move Anne Arundel County forward. Much like every other environment, it is filled with individuals who are only human and whose decisions can be clouded with lenses that are forged with a lifetime of diverse struggles. Recent events have lead us to make some tough choices —choices that…

Wow, one letter by Councilman Smith trying to project a positive tone and promising and asking for some civility and respectfulness among leaders in our community and it's devolved into another hateful, divisive, partisan, bunch of bickering. People can't say something nice without being denigrated. People can't compliment someone for saying something nice without being called names. People can't…   more ›

POLL: Which Republican Presidential Candidate Gets Your Vote?

Maryland's Republican "moderate middle" will matter on Tuesday.

Will former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s lead in Maryland turn into a win in Tuesday’s GOP presidential primary? Crofton Patch is offering readers the opportunity to vote and leave a comment about how they voted. Romney has a 17-point advantage over former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum in Maryland, according to a poll conducted by Rasmussen Reports on Wednesday. It showed Romney is supported by 45 percent of Maryland Republicans, Santorum by 28 percent, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich by 12 percent and Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) by 7 percent. Although officials aren’t predicting a high turnout in Maryland on Tuesday, it is expected to be an important day in the presidential race, when the “moderate middle of the Maryland GOP will be …

POLL: Should Teachers Interact with Students on Social Media?

Recent events suggest that when it comes to teachers and students, social media creates a tricky landscape.

A teacher at Arundel High School was reassigned after interacting with a student on Twitter. School officials confirmed an ongoing investigation involving the teacher, but declined to discuss details. Many students have defended the teacher, arguing that he was simply communicating with students in a way they feel comfortable. And many experts said social media applications can be used to enhance education. But other officials said teachers should avoid communicating with students on Twitter and Facebook, because there are too many ethical and legal pitfalls. We want to know what you think. Should teachers and students be allowed to interact on social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter? Vote in the poll below and leave a comment.

Bites Nearby: Milkshake Delight

Patch rounds up a list of places to get creamy shakes in the area.

If veins aren’t popping out of my forehead when I try to drink out of a straw, my milkshake isn’t thick enough. It takes a certain level of commitment to finish the perfect milkshake, and I’m not afraid to pop a blood vessel if it means enjoying the sweet sugary goodness of a chocolate, vanilla or strawberry shake. For those who like more exotic flavors, Huffington Post reported that some Jack in the Box restaurants recently introduced a bacon milkshake reportedly made with bacon-flavored syrup. (Too bad there aren't any restaurants in Maryland where you can try it.) Here are Patch editor-recommended milkshake destinations in the area. Leave a comment below to tell us your favorite place. Crofton—Head to Bruster's, located at 1125 Route 3 …

Who Has Super Plans for Sunday?

The National Restaurant Association estimates 12 million people will visit a restaurant or bar so leave a comment to let us know where you will be during the Super Bowl.

Whether you watch for the football or just to see the commercials, Patch wants to know where you will be on Sunday to watch the Super Bowl—out on the town or at home on the couch? Around 12 million people are expected to visit a restaurant or bar on Sunday, according to the National Restaurant Association. Yet, the association estimates that four times as many people will just order takeout or delivery food from a restaurant. When asked which food items are a "must have" on game day by the National Restaurant Association, here is how people responded: Here are some nearby restaurants to try: Buffalo Wild Wings, located at 10601 Martin Luther King Jr. Highway in Bowie, features chicken wings ranging from mild to "blazin" hot. Get your wings…

YOUR PHOTOS: CMES Students Study 2012 Election

A bulletin board at Crofton Middle School guides students through the 2012 election cycle.

Crofton Local Editor Nicki Mayo shares a conversation with students talking politics. How do you get kids interested in politics? The answer may be as simple as a school bulletin board.  While working on a story at Crofton Middle School, I stopped to snap a picture of a display case with a huge banner on the top that read: “Who will run against Barack Obama in the November 2012 Presidential Election?"  I’m a political nerd, so I stood and looked at the attention to detail on the board. There were descriptions of each of the Republican candidates vying for a chance at the presidency. Blue ribbons were posted beside the front runners of the New Hampshire and Iowa primaries. The students are also placing an “X” over the candidates as they …

POLL: Do You Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day?

Are you off today? Do you have to work? Crofton Patch Local Editor Nicki Mayo asks how will you spend this Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

It’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2012. Here’s a little known fact: I obtained dual-degrees in undergrad. I majored in Communications and African American Studies. So every year around this time I wonder how will people spend Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I was always taught Martin Luther King Jr. Day is "a day on, not a day off." As a youth I used to compete in those speech competitions at the Baltimore Museum or Art or enter a poster contest. Now as an adult I find myself often working on the holiday out in the field gathering news. Market-hopping around the country as a journalist you notice something about Martin Luther King Jr. Day … not everyone celebrates it.  The children may be off from school. The federal employees may be off. But, …

@KEVIN EDGINGTON you raise a good point that I hope others take note. Dr. King advocated for all people. He was in Memphis for the the Poor People's Campaign March when he was assassinated. That movement addressed poverty across all ethnicities.   more ›
