Ashley Strickler won the $3,000 scholarship for her interest in developing software to improve the performance of dancers
A Crofton resident and Towson University student recently won a scholarship for her work in developing software to analyze the movements of dancers. Ashley Strickler, a junior at Towson, won the $3,000 scholarship from the Mid-Atlantic CIO Forum, a group that fosters communication between top technology professionals. Strickler is a business management and computer science major and member of the school dance team. As part of the application process, Strickler was asked to describe how technology fit with their professional goals. She presented her plans to develop software that will evaluate the skill of dancers, similar to how some software can critique golf and baseball swings. The South River High boys lacrosse team took another step toward a state title Wednesday, winning the Class 3A/4A East regional crown. The Seahawks beat Chesapeake 10-3 in the regional final. The team will next play Howard High School for a shot at the state title game. The South River girls lacrosse team fell short of advancing in the playoffs, losing 14-13 to Broadneck. Patch caught up with the authors of @Love4Arundel and @ArundelLove Twitter Accounts, who have been spreading cheer throughout the school
On Monday, Patch highlighted a pair of new Twitter feeds that that have been injecting some good vibes into the Arundel High School community. As it turns out, the Twitter feeds are part of a broader effort by several students to promote positivity throughout the school. Patch spoke by email with one Arundel junior who authors the Make Arundel Smile (@Love4Arundel) feed, as well as a sophomore and junior involved in the Arundel Love (@ArundelLove) account. All three are honors students, and requested anonymity because they believed the accounts would have greater impact if people did not know who were behind them. The Arundel and Old Mill baseball teams faced off in the MPSSAA Class 4A playoffs. Follow the recap of our live game log on Patch.
Arundel hosted Old Mill in the second round of the Class 4A East region baseball playoffs on Monday. Arundel prevailed 1-0 behind a strong pitching performance by Cooper Hibbs. The Wildcats will next play the winner of the Meade-North County game. You can look here for a recap of the game. A pair of Twitter feeds are offering frequent words of encouragement and inspiration to students.
Much has been written about the potential destructive power of social media, but there are at least two Twitter feeds dedicated to bolstering the spirits of those at Arundel High School. The feeds Arundel Compliments (@ArundelLove) and Make Arundel Smile (@Love4Arundel) offer frequent words of encouragement and compliments in 140 characters or less. Many of the comments are general, but often are directed at individual students. "Never forget you are all beautiful!" came a Tweet from @ArundelLove on May 1. It was a tough Friday for the Arundel lacrosse teams, as both the girls and boys fell in the MPSSAA state tournament. The Arundel boys were upset 11-9 by Chesapeake, while the girls fell 14-9 to top-seeded Huntingtown. South River, however, remains alive in the tourament with both its teams advancing. The Seahawk boys topped Broadneck 11-7 and will play at Huntingtown on Monday. The girls secured a big 19-1 win over Northern High on Friday, and will next host Huntingtown.
