Maryland Reacts to Sandy Hook School Shooting

Counties across the state took measures to deal with the Newtown, CT school shooting.

Communities across Maryland have been reeling in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Some residents said they feared dropping their children off at school while others demanded action from legislators. Hyattsville Elementary School's new principal, Julia Burton, addressed her students Monday before Prince George's County schools observed a minute of silence to honor the victims of Friday's school shooting in Newtown, CT. "Take care of yourself. Take care of each other. And take care of the place," she told students. In Wheaton, parents reacted to the tragic news and talked about school safety in Montgomery County. Frances Frost, a contributor to the Local Voices section on Wheaton Patch, wrote in an email: "As a mom of 4…

Early Voting Up in Anne Arundel County

The county is on track to break its 2010 early-voting numbers, but it lags behind most Maryland counties that have already surpassed their previous numbers.

Early voter turnout in Anne Arundel County is on track to be higher than 2010, despite the interruption of Hurricane Sandy. As of Thursday night, 8 percent of the county's registered voters had voted compared with an 8.74 percent early-voting turnout for the midterm elections—a difference of 644 fewer votes. With early-voting continuing through Friday, Anne Arundel County was expected to exceed the 2010 early figures. "Wait until we have the final numbers," said Joe Torre, the director of Anne Arundel County's Board of Elections. "As of 2:20 p.m. today we already had 4,569 votes cast. Those are unofficial numbers of course." He said waiting times on Friday have consistently been around the two-hour mark with an average of 700 ballots being…

And THAT, my friends, is why you fill out the sample ballot ahead of time, AFTER you've researched the issues. THEN you take your completed ballot with you and use it as a cheat sheet and you're out in no time. And OF COURSE early voting is higher in 2012; it's in 2010 a Presidential election year.!   more ›

Anne Arundel Under a High Wind Advisory

BGE is preparing for potential outages after the National Weather Service warns of gusts up to 55 mph.

The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory Friday for Anne Arundel County, saying the area could experience gusts up to 55 mph. The advisory is in effect from 3 p.m. Friday to 12 a.m. Saturday. The weather service said the strongest winds should be later in the afternoon through the evening. There could be sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph, according to the advisory. The weather service said the advisory means you should take appropriate precautions and that such strong winds can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. And Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. (BGE) officials said the utility company is watching the weather and is prepared to respond to any power outages. The high winds can knock down trees or limbs …

Animal Control Searching for Owners of 'Bait Dog'

Animal Control picked up a severely injured pit bull in Linthicum Feb. 2 and determined he was used to train other dogs to fight.

Anne Arundel County Animal Control officials are looking for the owners of a severely injured pit bull that officers believe was used as a "bait dog" to train other dogs to fight. According to a police press release, animal control responded on Feb. 2 to the 600 block of Andover Road in Linthicum after a resident reported seeing an injured pit bull. Officers took the dog, who is now named "Rocky Road," back to the shelter and noticed he was in severe pain and had difficulty moving around. After considering the possibility of euthanizing the dog to end his suffering, animal control officials contacted Waugh Chapel Animal Hospital in Gambrills. Doctors there offered to treat the dog for free, according to the release. Investigation by Animal…
