Three members of the Anne Arundel County Council spent the day rescuing dummies, cutting open cars and putting out fires as part of Fire Ops 101 class.
In a dark, smoke-filled building, County Councilman Jerry Walker crawled across the floor. Drenched in sweat, he heard the fire crackle but couldn't see it burning as he groped for the edges of the room. Finally, Walker's hands locked on the 125-pound rescue dummy, and he helped carry it to safety. "It felt like twice that," Walker said. "I can't imagine carrying out a guy like myself who is 250 pounds." Walker and two other council members saved mannequins, manned fire hoses and cut open cars as part of an educational class with the Anne Arundel County Fire Department at its Millersville training facility Friday. Fire Ops 10 marked the first time county firefighters have hosted a class for lawmakers, but the idea came from similar events …

As first responders and community members gathered for a moment of silence on the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Anne Arundel's county executive focused on what he said he sees as the next great threat.
Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold focused his remarks at a 9/11 memorial on Tuesday on the importance of cybersecurity. "Cyberterrorism will shut down our electrical grids, shut down our air-traffic-control system, shut down our financial networks," Leopold said. "We spend $4 billion on cyberdefense in this country, which is less than what we spend on agricultural subsidies. We need to do more." He called Anne Arundel County the epicenter of national security effort to combat cyberterrorism because of U.S. Cyber Command at Fort Meade. In 2011, Patch reported on an increase in congestion around Fort Meade as thousands of new workers commuted to the area on a daily basis. And in 2012, discrepancies between how the White House …
About 80 people gathered at the 9/11 Memorial in front of the police and fire department headquarters in Millersville to observe a moment of silence.
Firefighters, police officers and citizens from around Anne Arundel County stood in the shadow of the 9/11 memorial in Millersville to pay their respects on Tuesday morning. Fire Division Chief Michael Cox's radio crackled at 8:50 a.m. and a woman's voice asked for a moment of silence to honor all those who gave their lives on September 11. The crowd of about 80 people bowed their heads. Rev. Linda Schlicht, the fire department's chaplain, lead the crowd in prayer and asked for blessings upon "the families who have been left behind" and "all of those who are our first responders in fire and law enforcement." County Executive John R. Leopold reminded those gathered that Maryland lost 68 of its own people on that tragic day 11 years ago, …

Leopold encourages the public to join him at the memorial at 8:50 a.m. for a moment of silence to pay tribute to the public safety personnel, victims and troops who lost their lives. “Our memorial featuring steel beams from the World Trade Center has become an important place to reflect and learn about a day that will forever live in infamy,” Leopold said in a prepared statement. “We encourage the public to pay tribute, reflect, and participate in a day of service.” The Police and Fire Department Headquarters…

The devices, which send an electric shock to the heart, will be distributed by the Connor Cares Foundation and are required on site at all public pools in Anne Arundel County.
Public officials were on hand Thursday morning in Annapolis as the Anne Arundel County Fire Department donated 15 old Automated External Defibrillators (AED) to the Connor Cares Foundation. An AED is a portable device that sends an electric shock to the heart to try and restore its normal rhythm. The donation was made in honor of new legislation, known as Connor's Law, that requires all public (and semi-private) pools to have an AED on site. County Executive John R. Leopold signed the law in July in honor of Connor Freed, who was 5 years old when he drowned in a Crofton swimming pool in 2006. The lifeguard on duty was reportedly not properly trained how to use an AED. Leopold and Fire Chief John Robert Ray made the presentation of the AEDs…

You're right, Barb. People drive Rt 3 as if it were a high-speed interstate. It is a suburban highway with too many traffic lights, too close together (especially up by Waugh Chapel... there isn't enough distance between the lights to allow proper reaction time at the speed limit, let alone 10 over), The speed limit is generally between 45--50 between the Wawa in Gambrills and Rt 50 in Bowie, yet…   more ›
