The basketball, wrestling and bowling seasons are among those getting started this week.
There was very little gap between the fall and winter sports seasons at local high schools. Winter sports get going this week with scrimmages, and some regular season matchups are scheduled for next week. Here's a look at what's happening at Arundel High. The MPSSAA playoffs are set for several local high school sports teams. The state field hockey tournament is underway, while soccer kicks off Thursday. Meanwhile, cross country runners had their championship earlier this week. Here's a look at what's happening for the local teams in each sport. GIRLS SOCCER Arundel earned the number one seed in the east region of the MPSSAA Class 4A state soccer tournament. The Lady Wildcats earned a first-round bye and will play Tuesday against the winner between Great Mills and North County. Arundel finished with just one loss in the regular season, after falling 3-0 to South River on Tuesday. Both the Wildcats and Mustangs are hoping to begin 3-0 on the season. Meanwhile, Old Mill looks to continue winning with a game at North County.
Local high school football teams are back in action Friday night in Week 3 of the season. The Arundel High Wildcats will host the Meade High Mustangs at Carroll Field, pitting two teams with undefeated records. Arundel is coming off a 55-0 trouncing of Northeast last week, while Meade recorded a big 41-0 win over Annapolis. Arundel quarterback Cooper Hibbs completed 12 passes on 14 attempts with 5 touchdown passes against Northeast before being relieved by friend Jack Gordon. Running back Matt Davis had 105 yards rushing on just five carries, and scored twice. Meade is led by quarterback Marcus Smith, who had 125 yards passing and three scores against Annapolis. Varsity kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Carroll Field in Gambrills. …
