Arundel Volleyball Falls in State Title Game

The Wildcats held a game point early, but ultimately fell to Sherwood for the third straight year.

Midway through the second game in Monday’s Class 4A volleyball title match, Arundel and Sherwood had played a total of 70 points. They had each won 35, and it was anyone’s match. But it was Sherwood that pulled away, grabbing the final two sets to sweep Arundel and claim its third consecutive state championship.  The powerhouse from Montgomery County dominated most of the second game and the third, led by senior Alex Holston’s 25 kills. Sherwood won 27-25, 25-14, 25-13. For Arundel, it was the third straight year with a season-ending loss to Sherwood. But it was perhaps the team’s strongest showing out of those three contests, as it actually held a set point in the first game before losing the last three points (two of which came on …

Wildcats Go For Volleyball State Title Monday

The team will take on Sherwood again in the championship match at College Park.

Here we go again.  The Arundel volleyball team will take another stab at a state championship Monday night when it takes on Sherwood for the third time in as many years.  The Wildcats, who are undefeated on the year, will look for one more win to take home the school's first-ever championship in volleyball. Arundel qualified for the title game with a convincing win over Eleanor Roosevelt in the semifinal, but coaches and players all said they will have to step up their game to come out on top Monday. Sherwood has won the past two state titles, beating Arundel in last year's final and in the semifinal in 2010. The Warriors are led by senior Alex Holston, who tied a tournament record for kills with 37 in the team's previous win over Walter …

Good luck Arundel girls volleyball. AND, South River's girls soccer team won the State Championship last Friday. I searched and searched the Crofton Patch for a nice article on that. Oh wait, I forgot - the Crofton Patch only cares about Arundel High School. I can not fathom why the Crofton Patch refuses to recognize that Crofton does NOT have one local high school team. We have two local high …   more ›

Arundel Volleyball Advances to State Title Game

The team topped Eleanor Roosevelt and will now face Sherwood for the third time in as many years.

COLLEGE PARK - Maybe the third time will be a charm. Arundel High swept Eleanor Roosevelt High on the semifinals of the MPSSAA Class 4A volleyball tournament on Thursday night, and will face playoff nemesis Sherwood High for a third straight year. Arundel, which moved to 19-0 on the year, overcame a nervous start to move past the Class 4A South champion Raiders in a match played at Ritchie Coliseum in College Park. It will turn its sights Monday night to a Sherwood team that has won 56 games in a row after its own victory over Walter Johnson High on Thursday. Arundel lost to Sherwood in the state final last year and in the state semifinal in 2010. "This is what we've been looking forward to since the beginning of August," senior Allie Orr …

Arundel Volleyball Outlasts Broadneck in State Playoffs

The Wildcats won 3-2 in a highly competitive affair to move on the regional final. South River, meanwhile, fell to Severna Park.

The volleyball rivalry between Arundel High and Broadneck High has been one of the best in the county in recent years.  It was on display again Wednesday, as Arundel edged Broadneck 3-2 to move into the Class 4A East regional final. Powered by seniors Ashley Felton and juniors Brittany and Allie Orr, the Wildcats are now one win away from a third consecutive appearance in the state final four. Tuesday's match was a tense affair that went the distance, and each set was competitive. Arundel took the first game from Broadneck, 25-23, but Broadneck bounced back with a 25-22 win in the second. Arundel then won the third game 25-23. Broadneck tied things up at 25-22 in the fourth, but Arundel took the final game 15-11.  Arundel will host Severna…

Local Teams Go After Championships

The Arundel football, volleyball and girls soccer teams will all be in action this week. Teams from Old Mill and Meade also have championship aspirations.

It does not take long to add up the combined number of losses by the Arundel football, volleyball and girls soccer teams. The teams have nothing but wins on the season, and continue their quest for state championships this week in the playoffs.  The volleyball team begins its quest for a third straight regional title when it opens the playoffs Monday at 6 p.m. against Leonardtown. The girls soccer team will host South River in the regional final on Tuesday at 5 p.m. A win would place them in the state final four. The football team is 10-0 and will host local rival Meade High, which qualified for the playoffs after beating Broadneck last week. With a win, Arundel would face the winner of the game between Old Mill and South River.  For the …

Arundel Volleyball Runs the Table, Tops Severna Park

The team swept Severna Park on Thursday to win the county title.

The Arundel High volleyball completed a perfect regular season Thursday with a sweep of Severna Park, and will now begin its quest for a third straight regional crown.  The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead and fended off several Falcon rallies for a 3-0 victory and the Anne Arundel County championship.  The team will now await the announcement of the bracket for the MPSSAA state championship. Last year, Arundel fell in the state title game. In 2010, it lost in the state semifinal. Arundel coach Ashley Yuscavage downplayed the significance of the perfect record, knowing that the team has its sights set on the big prize. "Everyone goes into the playoffs with a clean slate. But it certainly doesn't hurt. It gives us some more confidence, …
