The Arundel volleyball teams will do their part in spiking breast cancer Thursday, as they host the annual "Dig Pink" game against Severna Park. The teams will wear pink, and proceeds and donation from the games will go to support the Side Out Foundation, which raises money for cancer research. It's also a key game for the varsity girls, who would keep an unbeaten record intact and secure the county title with a win over Severna Park. The junior varsity match starts at 5 p.m. at the Arundel High gym, with the varsity match to follow.

My mother celebrates her birthday right around Election Day every year. Heading to the polls always helps me remember that I need to get her a gift. It's easy to forget all of these important days. Your wedding anniversary. Kids birthdays. When is Christmas this year? It all becomes even more overwhelming when the days, weeks and months are dedicated to specific causes. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. That's a biggie. Breast cancer affects a lot of people, and it's hard to escape the perpetual presence of pink during the month. October comes after Leukemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma Awareness Month in September. September is also Ovarian Cancer Month. November, meanwhile, is Pancreatic Cancer Month. It's also Stomach Cancer …

It’s estimated that more than 2 million people are diagnosed with breast cancer and fight for their lives each year. Breast cancer is difficult to face alone—for both patients and their loved ones. To help in the battle, there are a number of local resources and support groups. Anne Arundel Medical Center offers a series of groups, including a general support group and one specifically for those who have been diagnosed with lung cancer in the last two years. Survivors Offering Support offers one-on-one mentoring for breast cancer patients, and there's also a Transition to Wellness workshop to help those transitioning into recovery…

Earlier this month, Odenton ACE Hardware gave away pink buckets to anyone who made a $5 donation to fight breast cancer, and offered a 20 percent discount on all items that could fit in the bucket. All this month, Little Treasury Jewelers in Gambrills is offering a free pink Pandora leather bracelet if you buy $85 worth of Pandora jewelery. But before you plunk down your green for some pink, the nonprofits behind Breast Cancer Awareness Month want you to check the label. Jenna Glazer, director of development for Young Survival …
