This Fathers Day Local fire fighter dads will be ready for action.
John Hafler won’t be spending this Fathers Day in his back yard grilling a hamburger feast. He won’t be relaxing watching a baseball game. Nor will Halfer spend it at home with family. He will be working a 24 hour shift at the Arundel Volunteer Fire Department. “This is not the first time I have worked Fathers Day,” said Anne Arundel County career firefighter Halfer. However, unlike previous years, this time Halfer’s son will be at the station with him. Eighteen year old Matt Halfer is now a volunteer member of the AVFD. Two years ago the recent high school graduate began taking firefighting and EMS classes through the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. “It has been great; I always knew I was going to become a fire fighter. I used to …

If it “takes a village to raise a child,” the All Pro Dads program seeks to cultivate a community of strong dads to raise those children. A national program has come to Crofton and Gambrills in an effort to help dads navigate fatherhood. The All Pro Dads fatherhood program is part of the Family First national non-profit organization. Former Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy helped launch the Tampa, FL based program in 1997. According to a news release, All Pro Dads features almost 60 NFL players, coaches, and alumni who encourage men to be good fathers. AJ Jegede is a father of two and serves as a fatherhood coach. Pastor Shawn Jegede also helps organize and get the word out about the program, which is new to the area. The couple …

Cub Scouts provides fathers and sons life long memories.
At a recent end of the year Cub Scout party Dave Underwood, like the other dads in the room, could not take his eyes off the television. A compellation of pictures of themselves and their sons over the previous five years passed in front of them. Most of the ten scouts in the Pack 731 Den 10 had been in scouting since the beginning of first grade. This past May all the boys participated in the annual “Bridging Ceremony” at the Millersville KOA campground. The outdoor event included a camp fire and a small mock bridge over which each Cub Scout crossed to become a Boy Scout. According to Cub Master Brian Taschenberger the Cub Scouts and their parents worked hard to reach this night. Each of the Scouts made the long journey up the Cub …

Chef Dad shares his secrets for raising culinary kids
Cooking is my passion and my profession. I spend more time in a kitchen than anywhere else. Because of the creative nature of my business, I’m always learning and discovering. One of my greatest joys is sharing these revelations with my sons, Patrick, 8, and Cameron, 5. Father’s Day around my house is great. My wife Jennifer and the boys always do something extra special for me. But this day also reminds me how becoming a father led me to this point in my career as a chef. I worked for years in some of the greatest restaurants in Washington, DC. I always dreamed of having my own business. When the boys were born, I took advantage of an opportunity to start a catering operation where I could indulge in my passion for food and …

What are Crofton moms doing to honor the fathers in their lives?
Father’s Day is Sunday June 19. It’s a day where to stop to thank the men in our lives for being dads. Be sure to stop and thank your own Dad. Thank the father of your children. And if there is a father-figure in your life, that went the extra mile to care for you, he is worthy of thanks as well. Classic gifts range from grilling equipment, sports equipment and car accessories to ties, tools and hammocks! Why not treat “Dad” to something different this year? Perhaps tickets to a music or sporting event or maybe even organizing a “guy’s night out” for him? One dad shared that the most unusual gift he received one year was a set of Dr. Schol’s massaging shoe inserts. While not an obvious gift, this father who stood on his feet all day …
Second and third generation father-son duos partner in business.
What do successful father-son businesses in Crofton have in common? They seem to especially relish their work, and working well with each other. They also place a high value on customer satisfaction, quality, and trustworthiness. In Crofton Shopping Center, selling carpeting has been a father-son tradition for three generations. Not only is it a father-son partnership, it all began with their grandfather. William Berlin originally opened Quality Carpet over 40 years ago. Over the years Berlin’s son, Bill and his brother became involved in the business. This eventually lead to them purchasing the business from their father. According to Greg Berlin, who partnered with his dad, Bill Berlin, the two eventually took over the business full …
