Board Approves Crofton School Redistricting

Students will be moved from Nantucket to Crofton Meadows elementary schools.

The Anne Arundel County Board of Education has approved a redistricting plan that would shift student populations from Nantucket to Crofton Meadows elementary schools.  The bulk of the plan, which was crafted by a committee of parents and endorsed by Superintendent Kevin Maxwell, will go into effect for the 2014-15 school year.  The plan was designed to address overcrowding at Nantucket Elementary.  The main provisions of the plan are as follows:

Board to Vote on Crofton School Redistricting

The plan to move some students out of Nantucket Elementary School has been endorsed by parents and Superintendent Kevin Maxwell.

The Anne Arundel Board of Education will vote next week on a redistricting plan for schools in Crofton.  The plan, which was presented to the board by parents involved in a special redistricting committee, seeks to address overcrowding at Nantucket Elementary School. It has received the endorsement of Superintendent Kevin Maxwell.  Under the plan, an estimated 113 students will be moved from Nantucket to Crofton Meadows Elementary for the 2014 school year. The plan would also move approximately 59 students from Nantucket to Crofton Elementary in 2015. The board will vote on the plan during its meeting Wednesday, April 3, at 10 a.m. in Annapolis. Board to Consider Crofton School Redistricting

The school board will vote on what plan to take to public hearing.

The Anne Arundel County Board of Education on Wednesday will vote on whether to take a school redistricting plan for Crofton to public hearings.  The board will vote on a proposal designed to reduce overcrowding at Nantucket Elementary School. Thus far, it is the only proposal before the board.  The redistricting plan comes with the recommendation of Superintendent Kevin Maxwell, and is identical to one presented by a committee of parents and community members last fall.  The plan calls for:  The date of any public hearings have not yet been set, and the board could still consider any redistricting plans from the community. It must approve a redistricting plan of some kind by April 30.  See also:

Crofton School Redistricting, by the Numbers

As parents start their work on solving the overcrowding problem at Nantucket Elementary, Patch offers a look at the school enrollment numbers in the Crofton area.

The 16-member committee charged with recommending ways to redistrict schools in Crofton got its start on Monday night.  Now the group is neck deep in data and will meet several more times before presenting a plan to Anne Arundel County Schools Superintendent Kevin Maxwell.  The enrollment numbers from the school system make it clear that Nantucket Elementary School has an overcrowding problem. Projected enrollment for 2012 is 819, and the school has a capacity of just 684. Meanwhile, Crofton Woods Elementary is close to capacity and Crofton Elementary is almost 90 percent full. What you are missing is that these northern states have towns that are incorporated. These towns have elected officials who must answer to their residents.   more ›
