Tania Hendrickson was nominated and honored in a program sponsored by Military Spouse Magazine.
A Crofton mother was recently honored as Military Spouse of the Year for Fort Meade by a national magazine. The Capital-Gazette reported that Tania Hendrickson was recognized in Military Spouse magazine for her efforts to raise two boys while her husband has been deployed in Afghanistan. Both of her boys have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. Hendrickson was nominated by fellow Crofton resident Rebecca Pluta. In her letter nominating Hendrickson, Pluta wrote: "With such grace, gratitude and love, she meets the myriad of daily challenges that her life as a mom and a military spouse present. The chamber's Celebrate Community awards dinner will be held Feb. 20.
The West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce will honor educators, first responders and service members next week at its annual Celebrate Community awards dinner. The chamber has nominated teachers in elementary, middle and high schools to be named Educator of the Year in the county. In addition, the chamber will honor a school administrator, firefighter, police officer, sheriff's deputy and member of the military. As first responders and community members gathered for a moment of silence on the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Anne Arundel's county executive focused on what he said he sees as the next great threat.
Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold focused his remarks at a 9/11 memorial on Tuesday on the importance of cybersecurity. "Cyberterrorism will shut down our electrical grids, shut down our air-traffic-control system, shut down our financial networks," Leopold said. "We spend $4 billion on cyberdefense in this country, which is less than what we spend on agricultural subsidies. We need to do more." He called Anne Arundel County the epicenter of national security effort to combat cyberterrorism because of U.S. Cyber Command at Fort Meade. Arundel High School graduate Wanda Sykes once had a pretty good job at the National Security Agency, but left it at age 27 to pursue a career in comedy. It has paid off, as she has become well-known for her standup shows and roles on Curb Your Enthusiasm, Ice Age and other programs and films. She's back in the area this week with a show at The Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda. USO volunteer Nicole Orme helped Crofton Meadows Elementary make gifts for soldiers at Fort Meade. The students created 250 laminated placemats as gifts for troops. Those placemats were used Nov. 22 when Orme led an army of volunteers serving dinner to more than 300 troops at the “Salute Our Troops Thanksgiving Dinner.” The servicemen and women are members of the Defense Information School. The servicemen and women returned the favor to the children with a trip to the school to spend time with the youngsters.

Nicole Orme is heading up the “Salute Our Troops” Thanksgiving Dinner. On Nov. 22 Orme and an army of volunteers will prepare dinner for 250 to 300 members of the Defense Information School. The location for the dinner has yet to be determined. Orme said they hope to have it on the base. In order for this massive dinner to work, Orme said the volunteers need funds to purchase food for the event. Bowie’s Cornerstone Church has agreed to donate 15 whole turkeys. The volunteers need more funds for additional turkeys with all the trimmings. BRAC is only the beginning of an anticipated growth surge that will continue to fuel opportunities for businesses and individuals for years.
“The opportunities for growth at Fort Meade are tremendous,” said Jean Friedberg, a member of the Fort Meade Regional Growth Management Committee. On Sept. 28, Friedberg spoke to a standing room-only crowd at Essex Bank’s Crofton branch who came to hear about growth opportunities generated by the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process. The employment base at Fort Meade is 56,000, said Friedberg. That number includes military personnel, and government civilian and contractor employees. “For every defense employee, there are two private sector jobs that are created to support them,” he said. Being married to a member of our nation’s military can be considered a full-time job. These spouses face challenges that a non-military family cannot relate to – like the 11 moves in 14 years that the Hamrick family of Crofton have made. “If anyone tells you ahead of time how hard it’s going to be [a military spouse], you couldn’t do it,” said Kristi Hamrick. Her husband, TJ, an Air Force pilot, is a third generation winner of the Bronze Star. His father served in Vietnam, and his grandfather served in World War II.
