The new group of independent business owners is looking for new members.
A new group of local independent business owners is looking to grow its membership and will hold an open house next week. TradeNet, which includes many business owners in west Anne Arundel County, will hold the event at the Gambrills General Store on Monday from 6-7:30 p.m. Anyone is welcome, but the group is specifically seeking sole proprietors or managers of independent businesses. TradeNet was created last year as a way for independent business owners to share ideas, offer support and to collaborate on community service activities. Current members of TradeNet include the Gambrills General Store, Bear's Honeypot, the Little House of Flowers, and Walt Eger's Service Center, among others. The Gambrills General Store will hold a special open house event on Friday, featuring free food, craft projects and a small store set up for kids. The open house will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and customers will be able to browse the store, sip on some hot drinks and munch on a cookie or two. Patch editor Tim Lemke will be on hand from 4-7 p.m. to meet local residents and hand out some additional goodies. Anyone who spends more than $20 at the store or signs up for Patch newsletters will receive a free Patch tote bag.

Pumpkin, the official mascot of the Gambrills General Store, found a helpful place to nap.
Customers at the Gambrills General Store this week may have noticed a box by the door to collect canned goods to help feed hungry families in the area. Pumpkin, the store's cat and mascot, found the box to be a cozy place to hang out. Store co-owned Janet Garman sent over this photo of Pumpkin. "Guess he thinks the grass is greener in a different home," Garman said. "Pumpkin always finds the funniest places to nap." The canned goods are being collected by the Rotary Club of West Anne Arundel County and will go to the Christian Assistance Program food pantry in Severn.

If you're looking to avoid the big malls on Saturday, the Gambrills General Store will welcome you with open arms. The store on Annapolis Road will have a special event to celebrate Small Business Saturday, and is already seeing brisk sales of many holiday gifts. The Gambrills General Store has a variety of holiday-themed items including ornaments, vintage toys, soaps and candles. Store co-owner Janet Garmen said one of the hottest sellers has been Christmas tree ornaments shaped like small animals and made out of coir, a coconut-based fiber. She also said there has been brisk sales of John Deere logo products, including caps, t-shirts and wallets. The store will celebrate Small Business Saturday with free food and music for anyone …
