Crofton team, coached by William Huggins, beats other Crofton team for the title
The Midget boys division of the recent county lacrosse tournament certainly had a Crofton feel to it. The reason—Crofton’s team that was coached by William Huggins scored a 4-2 victory over coach Jonathan Hill’s Crofton squad in that division’s championship game. Two Crofton teams made the final in the 12-team tournament. That victory let the Crofton squad finish the season with a 13-2 record. Huggins’ team bounced back from a tough overtime loss in the final game of the regular season to play well in the tournament. “That seemed to really pull the team together and make them stronger,” said Huggins. In the title game, Danny Policelli scored two goals. Sungha Cho added a goal and an assist. Jordan Carter scored the other goal. Andrew Wick …
A Gambrills teen and former Davidsonville Recreation League lacrosse player will represent Maryland in a national competition.
Neil Donahue of Gambrills has been selected for the National Lacrosse Classic Maryland Prep regional team. The Archbishop Spalding High School junior has been named a 2011 High School Underclassmen All-American. This is Donahue’s second time trying out for the NLC. “It proved something to myself. I proved that I could do it,” Neil said. “It gave me a lot more confidence.” Neil started playing lacrosse when he was 11 years old for the Davidsonville Recreation League. “We’re very excited. Neil took it upon himself to move to a level beyond high school,” said his father, Patrick Donohue. Neil is an active student athlete. He is a swimmer at Crofton Country Club, while playing lacrosse and football for Archbishop Spalding. “He started off …

Crofton edges Broadneck, 9-7, in title game
The Crofton Middie-A girls’ lacrosse team did just about everything right this season. The fifth- and sixth-graders rolled through the regular season with a 7-1-1 record and rolled to three more victories in the playoffs, finishing with a 9-7 victory over Broadneck for the Anne Arundel County title. In fact, nine seemed to be the magic number for Crofton as that was the number of goals the team scored in each of its three playoff wins. The first playoff game was a 9-5 victory over nearby GORC in the quarterfinals. After that came a wild 9-8 victory over Davidsonville in the semifinals. Crofton scored in the final 30 seconds to snap an 8-8 tie. Crofton didn’t appear in any trouble early as it rolled to a 5-0 lead before Davidsonville …

South River Baseball also wins, will be heading to regional playoffs.
After two consecutive losses in the East Regional Lacrosse Championship game, the South River Boys team (14-1) found the third time was certainly the charm, easily ousting visiting Annapolis High, 12-4, to advance to Friday's Maryland State semi-final game at Arundel High School. Sophomore Ben Chisholm led the Seahawks with four goals and two assists and senior Joey Papetti scored three goals, while senior goalkeeper Chris Sumpter made six saves against 26 Annapolis shots with most coming late in the fourth quarter. The two teams began slowly but played stout defense, as the Panther’s Kevin Pastrana made two of his 12 saves within the first few minutes of the contest. Three shots from Chisholm missed high. Papetti also sailed a shot wide …

Several Crofton Rec teams are off to good starts at Midget levels this spring.
The Crofton boys’ lacrosse teams have found lots of success so far this season in Anne Arundel County league action. In the Midget leagues in Anne Arundel County, Crofton has really started quickly Four Midget teams from Crofton have combined for a very impressive 27-2 record with a few games left in the spring season. Coach Raymond Boileau’s team has posted a 7-0 record in the “Platoon” division. That’s the top undefeated record so far, just a little better than coach Franklin Lequang’s 6-0 team in the “Cannon” division. There’s two other Crofton Midget teams that are not undefeated, but they’ve fared almost as well. Coach Jonathan Hill’s group has a 6-1 mark in the “Goose” division, and William Huggins’ team is 8-1 in the “Juke” …

The senior attackman sends South River to the Regional Semifinal with a seven-goal performance against Arundel.
South River coach Pat Noone said his team is growing up. The players chose a good time to do so. On Saturday, behind a seven-goal display from senior Joey Papetti, the Seahawks defeated Arundel High, 11-5. The win sent South River to the MPSSAA Regional Semifinals on Monday. "These guys, they're growing up, that's what they're doing," Noone said. "They're young kids and they're all growing up, and that's part of playing good ball." Along with Papetti's offensive outburst, the Seahawk defense locked down on the Arundel attack. "Our defense it tremendous. [You] can't ask for any more from them," Papetti said. Early patience from the visiting Wildcats would pay off when Hunter Cetrone tallied the game's first goal after four-and-a-half …

Arundel falls to Annapolis for the second time this season, ending the Lady Wildcat's playoff run.
The Arundel High girls lacrosse team had high hopes this year, but ultimately its inability to put two strong halves together ended its season. The Lady Wildcats were eliminated from the MPSSAA state playoff tournament on Thursday, falling to Annapolis, 15-9. "Expectations were high. I expected to win today," Arundel coach Josalyn Powers said. Ana Brandenburg and Madeline Dion each tallied three times to start the game for the visiting Panthers, who took an 8-0 lead after 15-plus minutes of play. "After we dig ourselves a hole, it's tough to come back," Powers said."We weren't able to overcome that deficit." Holly Johnson mustered the only Arundel goal of the half, scoring at the 9:11 mark. Annapolis would need just 22 seconds to match …

Wildcats begin their playoff run with a bang. A nine-goal first quarter boosts Arundel in a lopsided win. Junior midfielder Hunter Cetrone led the way with four goals.
Arundel coach Kevin Necessary said he believes his team is battle tested and ready. Friday's 18-0 dismantling of North Point was just another step for a team poised and determined to make playoff run. "We are battle tested, mentally and physically, and that's what the playoffs are all about," Necessary said. Four goals and an assist from junior Hunter Cetrone and three goals from seniors T.J. Holston and Mike Pucci powered the Wildcats past North Point. Cetrone fed Holston for the games first score 36 seconds into the game, and the Wildcats never looked back. "We knew were better than this team and we wanted to show it," Holston said. The Wildcats simply overwhelmed the Eagle defense, a program that is in only its second year of existence…
