The Mustangs took advantage of three red zone takeaways to hang on for a 36-28 win.
The Meade High Mustangs took a big step forward as a program Friday night, outlasting rival Arundel High 36-28 to advance to the Class 4A East regional final. Meade, which lost to Arundel 40-8 earlier in the year, took advantage of three big takeaways in the second half—including two interceptions near the end zone—to hand Arundel its only loss of the year. Meade will now go on to play Old Mill for a shot at the state final four. Not bad for a team that had just one other winning season since 2001. "For me it's just another stepping stone of where we need to be, but for the kids, it's a monkey off their back, I know that," said second-year head coach Rich Holzer. "They've been losing to them for so long. I'm happy for these kids." …

The Wildcats continued their dominance in the Battle of 175 series behind a strong defense and two-headed passing attack.
Entering Friday night, there was a feeling that that the Meade High Mustangs could be a tough challenge for the Arundel High Wildcats. After all, Meade had won its first two games of the year by a combined score of 76-0. But Arundel handled the challenge with an all-around strong effort, pulling away from Meade in the second half and emerging with a 40-8 win in Gambrills. Aaron Lewis-Cenales and Tyler Young each had two touchdown receptions in the win, while the defense held Meade to just 181 total yards. The win ensured that the coveted Mears Trophy would remain in the hands of Arundel for the 11th straight year, and gave the Wildcats a 3-0 start to the season. Local high school football teams are back in action Friday night in Week 3 of the season. The Arundel High Wildcats will host the Meade High Mustangs at Carroll Field, pitting two teams with undefeated records. Arundel is coming off a 55-0 trouncing of Northeast last week, while Meade recorded a big 41-0 win over Annapolis. Arundel quarterback Cooper Hibbs completed 12 passes on 14 attempts with 5 touchdown passes against Northeast before being relieved by friend Jack Gordon. Running back Matt Davis had 105 yards rushing on just five carries, and scored twice. Meade is led by quarterback Marcus Smith, who had 125 yards passing and three scores against Annapolis. Varsity kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Carroll Field in Gambrills. …
