After Season-Altering Injury, Seahawk Achieves His Dream

Despite missing the first third of the season, South River's Nick Sia made the All-County team and is set to meet his idol, Adam Jones.

Prior to the start South River’s varsity baseball season, outfielder Nick Sia sent a tweet to one of his idols, the Baltimore Orioles’ Adam Jones, to make a deal. “He agreed that if I make the state championship game or Brooks Robinson game, he’d meet me,” Sia said. Ecstatic about the possibility of meeting his idol, Sia set out to not only meet Jones but also to make the All-County team for a second year in a row while leading his team to the playoffs. But before the eager Seahawk could take the field, Sia’s spring came to a screeching halt. South River Boys Lacrosse Chase Perfection, State Title

South River's boys lacrosse coach says the team isn't playing just for a state championship, it's playing to honor an entire community.

When South River’s boys lacrosse team takes the field at UMBC Stadium Wednesday afternoon to face Westminster High in the 4A/3A State Championship, they won’t be playing just for themselves—they’ll be playing for an entire community. In the final matchup of what could be an undefeated season for the team, head coach Paul Noone told Patch “the boys” know what they need to do, and that the game is a culmination of the community’s effort. “[This season] is a testament to the recreation leagues, the assistant coaches, teams in Crofton, Davidsonville and South River—they have quality guys that are teaching these kids,” Noone said. Siemens Foundation Selects South River Scientists as National Finalists

Stefanie Biondi, Kendal Crawford and Ginal Lee could win $50,000 in scholarships from the Siemens Foundation for their environmental project to filter farm runoff.

Three South River High students are national finalists in the Siemens “We Can Change the World” challenge for their project on tackling pollution from farm runoff on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, according to a release by the Siemens Foundation. Team Duckweed includes Stefanie Biondi, Kendal Crawford and Ginal Lee. The team was concerned with the dangerously large dead zone in the Chesapeake Bay caused by agricultural runoff. The young scientists designed a system to filter farm runoff through bioremediation with duckweed plants. Thanks to their efforts and ingenuity, the team—under the guidance of Tanya Marushak—has a chance to win more than $50,000 in prizes and scholarships, according to a release by the Siemens Foundation. “[Team …
