CMES Studens Learn 'Key' to Music

Local pianist Sean Lane gives Crofton Meadows Elementary School students a Lesson in Jazz

Students at Crofton Meadows Elementary were recently treated to a jazzy lesson in music. Local pianist Sean Lane, of Bay Jazz Project recently came to the school with accompanist Seth Kibel to share with them information on jazz music. Lane has a gift with the piano. Besides being a renowned pianist, he can listen to basically any piece of music and play it by ear. They opened with “Take the A Train,” which Lane explained was written by Duke Ellington and named for the directions to his house. You had to take the "A train" to get there. Kibel accompanied on the tenor sax and later on the clarinet. Students were entertained and enjoyed the music. Lane then took student volunteers and had them join in the music. The Crofton Piano Company weathers the tough economy by adding boutique musical services. Owner Ridgely Fisher showcases his classic American and European pianos while describing the importance of music education. “I’ve always loved the piano,” said R. Ridgely Fisher, standing in the showroom of the Crofton Piano Company. The Baltimore native moved to Ft. Lauderdale as a child. He headed north to attend Harvard University as young adult. That’s where he opened the R&D Piano Forte Company. “Back then we focused more on repairs and restoration,” said Fisher. After 32 years in New England, he decided to return home to Maryland. Fisher moved from Boston to Crofton to be closer to his parents. But he returned with his love for music in tow. …
