POLL: Is Crofton a Ravens Town?

Patch Local Editor Nicki Mayo asks if Crofton-Gambrills residents are part of “Ravens Nation?” If you love the Ravens, please upload your "purple pride" photos here.

It’s another “Purple Friday” and I’m ready to rock my purple pride. That means wearing a purple sweater and yelling, “caw!” whenever the mood hits me. I’ve been doing this all season to support my beloved Baltimore Ravens, but living in Crofton I’ve noticed, I’ve been a little alone celebrating my favorite football team. By Saturday, I normally hit the road for Baltimore to watch the games with fellow Ravens fans. Traveling north on Maryland Route 3 and Interstate 97 the only “purple pride” signage I can count on is at Crofton Cantina. This week’s sign reads “Houston you have a problem. Go Ravens!” It’s showing support for the team heading into a playoff game against the Houston Texans. So what say you … is Crofton part of “Purple Nation?”

Crofton Boys Win In County Midget Lacrosse Tournament

Crofton team, coached by William Huggins, beats other Crofton team for the title

The Midget boys division of the recent county lacrosse tournament certainly had a Crofton feel to it. The reason—Crofton’s team that was coached by William Huggins scored a 4-2 victory over coach Jonathan Hill’s Crofton squad in that division’s championship game. Two Crofton teams made the final in the 12-team tournament. That victory let the Crofton squad finish the season with a 13-2 record. Huggins’ team bounced back from a tough overtime loss in the final game of the regular season to play well in the tournament. “That seemed to really pull the team together and make them stronger,” said Huggins. In the title game, Danny Policelli scored two goals. Sungha Cho added a goal and an assist. Jordan Carter scored the other goal. Andrew Wick …

On Friday, South River will meet rival Severna Park at home for the Class 4A East Regional Final game in boys baseball. The two teams have already met this season, with a win for each: the Seahawks won 5-3 at home on April 18; the Falcons took the game in a squeaker (11-10) on their home field at the end of April. The game at Seahawks stadium will begin at 4 p.m. To get to the finals, first seed South River beat sixth seed Broadneck, 5-0 on May 16. The Seahwks then took second seed North Point High (4-2), away, on May 18. The Seahawks starting pitcher, sophomore Scott Mitchell will have had a full day of rest going into the regional final game. Arundel Baseball Season Roundup

With the Wildcats eliminated from the baseball playoffs, here's a look at the season that was.

The Arundel baseball team’s season ended on Monday with a disappointing 9-1 loss to North Point in Waldorf.  The team finished with a 12-9 record, and nearly all of those losses were of the close and gut-wrenching type. (Remember that triple play?) Take away the North Point loss, and the team ‘s eight remaining losses were by a total of 11 runs. This was an experienced team that showed grit throughout the season as it battled tough county foes and injuries to some key players.  Here’s a rundown of the team and the season: Rob Warwick- the senior was one of the team’s best pitchers, and also one of the biggest power threats. He pitched well and hit a homer in the team’s first win over Severna Park.  Dalton Durocher – Like Warwick, one of …

A very nice article for a fairly nice team but where's the love for South River who just established a school record for wins in a season and is still looking to add three more? South River just ended the season for the same North Point team that defeated Arundel. I love the fact that the Patch is recognizing these young players and enjoy reading about them. But let's not forget that half of …   more ›

Boys Lacrosse: Papetti Powers Seahawks Past Arundel, 11-5

The senior attackman sends South River to the Regional Semifinal with a seven-goal performance against Arundel.

South River coach Pat Noone said his team is growing up. The players chose a good time to do so. On Saturday, behind a seven-goal display from senior Joey Papetti, the Seahawks defeated Arundel High, 11-5. The win sent South River to the MPSSAA Regional Semifinals on Monday. "These guys, they're growing up, that's what they're doing," Noone said. "They're young kids and they're all growing up, and that's part of playing good ball." Along with Papetti's offensive outburst, the Seahawk defense locked down on the Arundel attack. "Our defense it tremendous. [You] can't ask for any more from them," Papetti said. Early patience from the visiting Wildcats would pay off when Hunter Cetrone tallied the game's first goal after four-and-a-half …

Lady Wildcats End Playoff Run

Arundel falls to Annapolis for the second time this season, ending the Lady Wildcat's playoff run.

The Arundel High girls lacrosse team had high hopes this year, but ultimately its inability to put two strong halves together ended its season. The Lady Wildcats were eliminated from the MPSSAA state playoff tournament on Thursday, falling to Annapolis, 15-9. "Expectations were high. I expected to win today," Arundel coach Josalyn Powers said. Ana Brandenburg and Madeline Dion each tallied three times to start the game for the visiting Panthers, who took an 8-0 lead after 15-plus minutes of play. "After we dig ourselves a hole, it's tough to come back," Powers said."We weren't able to overcome that deficit." Holly Johnson mustered the only Arundel goal of the half, scoring at the 9:11 mark. Annapolis would need just 22 seconds to match …

Arundel Boys win over North Point to Advance

Wildcats begin their playoff run with a bang. A nine-goal first quarter boosts Arundel in a lopsided win. Junior midfielder Hunter Cetrone led the way with four goals.

Arundel coach Kevin Necessary said he believes his team is battle tested and ready. Friday's 18-0 dismantling of North Point was just another step for a team poised and determined to make playoff run. "We are battle tested, mentally and physically, and that's what the playoffs are all about," Necessary said. Four goals and an assist from junior Hunter Cetrone and three goals from seniors T.J. Holston and Mike Pucci powered the Wildcats past North Point. Cetrone fed Holston for the games first score 36 seconds into the game, and the Wildcats never looked back. "We knew were better than this team and we wanted to show it," Holston said. The Wildcats simply overwhelmed the Eagle defense, a program that is in only its second year of existence…

Hard fought game ended in sudden death overtime, 6 to 5.

South River High boys lacrosse met Broadneck in Edgewater Thursday evening for a hard-fought state playoff game that left the Bruins bruised by a 6 to 5 victory by the Seahawks. In Pasadena, the Lady Seahawks lacrosse team visted Chesapeake High School for their first round state playoff game, and won 18 to 6. On the home turf for the boys, there was big action at the beginning and the end of the game, with slower periods of play in the middle.
