Signs on Route 3 warn of a "major event" Sunday. The store will open at 7 a.m.
Area residents should expect heavy traffic Sunday when the new Wegmans store opens at the Waugh Chapel Towne Centre. With Wegmans set to open at 7 a.m., Anne Arundel County police said they are working with store officials to mitigate traffic problems. "With the grand opening festivities, we expect plenty of people and vehicles in and around the area of Waugh Chapel Village," police said in an email to the community. "You should plan accordingly for potential traffic disruption and delays." There are currently signs on Route 3 warning of a "major event" Sunday. It's been about one year since the new traffic pattern on Route 3 was put in place. Are you now accustomed to it?
Just about one year ago, drivers on Maryland Route 3 were introduce to the new traffic pattern known as the "Michigan U." The system offered a new way to turn off of Waugh Chapel Road and Reidel Avenue onto Route 3, and has been the subject of much discussion. In the past year, many motorists have cursed its existence, calling it confusing, dangerous, or just plain annoying. While others say it has offered an improvement over the previous pattern and has actually made things safer. "It’s a change for people who don’t see it everyday, and it’s very unusual for people who haven’t experienced it before,” State Highway traffic engineer Lee Starkloff said at a community meeting in March.
