About 80 people gathered at the 9/11 Memorial in front of the police and fire department headquarters in Millersville to observe a moment of silence.
Firefighters, police officers and citizens from around Anne Arundel County stood in the shadow of the 9/11 memorial in Millersville to pay their respects on Tuesday morning. Fire Division Chief Michael Cox's radio crackled at 8:50 a.m. and a woman's voice asked for a moment of silence to honor all those who gave their lives on September 11. The crowd of about 80 people bowed their heads. Rev. Linda Schlicht, the fire department's chaplain, lead the crowd in prayer and asked for blessings upon "the families who have been left behind" and "all of those who are our first responders in fire and law enforcement." Most people can tell you exactly what they were doing and how they felt when they heard the news on Sept. 11, 2001. I'd just dropped off my daughter at preschool and was listening to the radio while driving home. I nearly drove off the road when I heard the news—but thought it was a radio stunt à la The War of the Worlds, where it was a fictional account of events. It was simply too horrible to be real. When I got home, my babysitter was there with my younger daughter and we watched the twin towers fall on TV. I wasn't sure what to do—go back to the preschool and get my daughter? Take cover? Cry? Arundel Volunteer Fire Department members take a look back at the roles they played in responding to the 9/11 attacks. This is the second of a two part series.
Like many Americans, emotions from the events of September 11 are diverse among the fire fighters at the Arundel Volunteer Fire Department. Chuck Gross of the AVFD remembers fearing for his brother, an American Airlines pilot. “My brother was waiting to take off from Newark airport that morning and witnessed the attack on the towers from his position on the runway. It was frightening for us because one of the planes taken over by the terrorists had taken off from Newark airport and we didn't know for several hours that it wasn't his airplane.” Gross said he watched the remembrances on TV and felt grateful for all the people in all the security agencies who have prevented another attack. Retired Marine Mac McQuown takes a break along his 15,000 mile journey through Anne Arundel County to raise awareness for wounded veterans.
Retired Marine Mac McQuown left his home in Stafford, VA, on Sept. 11 to embark on a walking trip around the United States. He’s on a mission to raise awareness for veterans. McQuown’s journey is part of the Veterans Miracle Network Operation Walk America “Bald Man Walking Project.” “I’m walking to bring awareness to all veterans as far back as World War II,” McQuowon said. McQuown served in the U.S. Marines from 1980 to 1988. Now, he said his life is devoted to serving all veterans. He plans to travel 15,000 miles across the lower 48 states to raise awareness of wounded veterans issues. He’s getting help along the way from local law enforcement. The Prince of Peace Presbyterian Church hosted its annual Sunday School Kick-Off on Sept. 11 when more than 30 boys and girls gathered at the church for games, food and fellowship. Boy Scout Troop 731 helped prepare and serve food for the festivities. Christian Education Director Pam Ausiello said this is the second year the church has held a celebration to start to Sunday school year. But this year it was a party with a purpose. Money raised from items raffled off during the outdoor fellowship will go to support 9/11 memorial for Flight 93 victims.
