Local athletes announce where they are heading after graduation.
Seventeen athletes from South River High recently announced their intentions to play for specific athletic programs at the collegiate level. While most of the signees play for the boys or girls lacrosse teams, several other sports were represented when the Seahawks participated in National Signing Day last Wednesday. Athletes from the school’s lacrosse, girls basketball, swimming, baseball and field hockey teams each announced their decisions to play for college programs, ranging from Florida to Oregon. The girls lacrosse team contained the most college commitments with 11, while girls basketball, baseball and field hockey had the fewest—one each. The South River Boys Lacrosse team claimed its second Maryland 4A/3A State title in four years as they rallied past the Westminster Owls—overcoming a 7-0 deficit to start the game and winning it 10-8 as the final whistles sounded. After the Owls built tremendous momentum throughout the first and second quarters, Tyler White netted the first Seahawk goal with 4:30 remaining in the first half. South River's boys lacrosse team beat Westminster High 10-8 in a dramatic come-from-behind victory after being down 7-0.
South River’s boys lacrosse team won its second Class 4A/3A Maryland state lacrosse championship in four years Wednesday afternoon in dramatic fashion—beating Westminster High with a final score of 10-8 after initially falling behind 7-0. South River's boys lacrosse coach says the team isn't playing just for a state championship, it's playing to honor an entire community.
When South River’s boys lacrosse team takes the field at UMBC Stadium Wednesday afternoon to face Westminster High in the 4A/3A State Championship, they won’t be playing just for themselves—they’ll be playing for an entire community. In the final matchup of what could be an undefeated season for the team, head coach Paul Noone told Patch “the boys” know what they need to do, and that the game is a culmination of the community’s effort. “[This season] is a testament to the recreation leagues, the assistant coaches, teams in Crofton, Davidsonville and South River—they have quality guys that are teaching these kids,” Noone said.
