The South River and Arundel baseball teams are each one win away from facing one another in the MPSSAA Class 4A baseball tournament. South River will host Broadneck Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a third-round game in Edgewater. Meanwhile, Arundel hosts North County in Gambrills at 5 p.m. If Arundel and South River each win, they would play each other for the regional title. Arundel is the No. 2 seed in the east region and reached the state title game last year. The Wildcats advanced in the playoffs Monday by holding off Old Mill for a 1-0 win. South River is seeded fourth and advanced by beating Chesapeake, 7-0.

Alexandra Bartlett received a scholarship worth $2,500.
A South River High School senior is the most recent county student added to the growing list of National Merit Scholars, announced Wednesday by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Senior Alexandra Bartlett was chosen from a talented group of 15,000 students from across the country and among 57 from the state of Maryland, according to a release. She will receive a single-payment scholarship worth $2,500 to pursue her post-secondary studies in biomedical engineering. Students earn the honor based on their excellent academic records, standardized test performances, school and community leadership, essay submissions and high school recommendations. Boys Lacrosse The boys lacrosse team easily handled Chesapeake High School 10-3 Tuesday night in Edgewater. A team of South River High School students has created a way to help make homework and studying easier, and the school is receiving $10,000 because of it. Five students in South River’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) program were recently named among the top ten teams on the Verizon Innovate App Challenge, according to a press release. Juniors Maryam Ermin-Sinanovic, Jasmine Hall, Gelsey Jian, Megan Prass, and Heritage Weems created the award-winning app “Study Buddy.” The app is aimed at increasing academic success by encouraging good study, organizational, and time management skills. “Study Buddy” earned top points for its innovative design, creativity and practicality.
