South River 'Play-A-Thon' Seeks to Increase Skills, Funding

The event will serve as entertainment for the public while providing additional funding for the band's competition trip to South Carolina in the spring.

As someone who played tenor saxophone for 12 years, I know how hard it is to play an instrument for hours on end. So when I heard about South River High’s concert band’s 9-hour “Play-A-Thon,” my jaw dropped. Starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, about 100 South River students and 35 adult volunteers will participate in a musical marathon for a special one-time concert/educational experience—ultimately culminating into a one-hour show from 4-5 p.m. Hosted by the South River Music Boosters, family members, residents who pledged financially and other guests are invited to volunteer throughout the day and as the young musicians gain extra training and instruction.
