For the first time in the school's history, two girls sports programs claimed state championships in the same season.
In the past, South River's girls sports teams have come awfully close to claiming a two-title season. Back in 2005, the Seahawks' field hockey team won the title, but the girls soccer squad fell short in the championship game. However, last week, the local school community saw both those teams claim championships, allowing South River to claim it has one of the most impressive girls sports programs in the state—at least for now. The field hockey squad soundly defeated Catonsville High 6-0 last week. That performance was followed up and matched by the girls soccer team, which won a state title of their own in penalties against Bethesda-Chevy Chase High on Saturday. For the girls soccer team, the championship was its first since back-to-…

South River fell to Old Mill in the regional semifinals Friday night as the Patriots' defense kept Connor Cox and his talented receiver corps at bay.
One of the most successful seasons in South River football’s history came to an end Friday night, as the Seahawks fell to reigning state champions, the Old Mill Patriots 21-7. After defeating the same Old Mill side in a shootout the previous week, the renowned South River passing game—led by senior quarterback Connor Cox and senior wide receiver Eric Young—was contained by a brutal Patriot secondary, which held the Seahawks to only three receptions in the first half. Patriots running back Shawn Brown made use of his 39 carries, as he gained a massive 225 yards and 2 scores on the ground. Old Mill realized early that the running game was working as they elected to rush on the first 19 consecutive plays and kept with it throughout the game—…

Nick Sia wrapped up his impressive season by finally meeting his idol, Baltimore Orioles' centerfielder Adam Jones.
Before the start of the 2012 baseball season, South River outfield Nick Sia made a deal via Twitter with one of his idols, Adam Jones. Jones agreed that if Sia was selected to the Brooks Robinson game, an end-of-the-year event highlighting the best players in the state, the Orioles centerfield would meet the local teen. On Sunday, Sia’s dream came true. Following the game, the local teen’s smile went ear-to-ear. “I was amazed he actually came to watch the game. He seemed really cool—a genuinely nice guy,” Sia told Patch. Last week, Patch featured the 17-year-old and his personal struggle to compete this season while battling through an early-season injury. His primary goals were to win a state championship, make the All-County team and …
