South River Boys Lacrosse Chase Perfection, State Title

South River's boys lacrosse coach says the team isn't playing just for a state championship, it's playing to honor an entire community.

When South River’s boys lacrosse team takes the field at UMBC Stadium Wednesday afternoon to face Westminster High in the 4A/3A State Championship, they won’t be playing just for themselves—they’ll be playing for an entire community. In the final matchup of what could be an undefeated season for the team, head coach Paul Noone told Patch “the boys” know what they need to do, and that the game is a culmination of the community’s effort. “[This season] is a testament to the recreation leagues, the assistant coaches, teams in Crofton, Davidsonville and South River—they have quality guys that are teaching these kids,” Noone said. Hundreds of young kids play lacrosse in youth leagues throughout the region in hopes of one day playing for a state…

Play 18 Holes To Support South River Athletics

Golfers and South River sports fans will take part in a massive fundraising event on April 16 to support all Seahawks teams.

South River High's sports booster club is seeking golfers and sponsors to attend its second annual golf tournament at the Crofton Country Club on April 16. Created as a massive fundraising event to benefit all athletic teams at South River High, the golf tournament is the single biggest event of the year held by the high school sports boosters. Sharon Puckett, a coordinator for the South River High sports booster committee, said participants don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy the event. The day-long event will start with some time at the driving range, followed by a round at the Crofton Country Club. After lunch, golfers will participate in a shootout competition and then enjoy an awards banquet with a silent auction. Everyone with a …

Arundel Beats South River, 31-30

The Wildcats stopped a two-point conversion attempt in the final seconds, and held to move to 4-0.

After watching his team commit a series of costly mistakes on Friday night, Arundel High football coach Chuck Markiewicz needed to know if the Wildcats were ready for prime time. It was halftime against rival South River, and Arundel trailed by ten points. Silly penalties and untimely interceptions were the culprit. “I said ‘if we lose to a team that’s better than us, that dominates us and really takes us to us, I’m OK with that,’” he said. “But we shot ourselves the foot so many times.” The Wildcats tightened up and rallied, however, and stopped a potential game-winning two-point conversion try in the waning seconds, holding on for a rousing 31-30 win. “We always find out what we need to do,” said junior quarterback Cooper Hibbs, who …

Wildcats vs. Seahawks Football, Who Will Win Tonight?

We have five things to watch Friday night as the local rivalry hits the gridiron in Gambrills.

Last Friday's win by South River over the tough Broadneck Bruins set the stage for a compelling showdown against Arundel. History shows that three teams from Anne Arundel County usually make it to the regional playoffs, and in recent years, those teams have been Arundel, Old Mill and Broadneck. Now, however, South River is in a position to snare a playoff spot, and would actually move to second place in the county with a win over the Wildcats. It's still early in the season, but Friday's game is an important one for both teams. Arundel (3-0) hosts South River (2-1) at 6:30 p.m. at Carroll Field in Gambrills. Here are five things to look out for: Hibbs to Tighe – The connection of quarterback Cooper Hibbs to wide receiver Dillon Tighe has …

South River Beats Broadneck, 42-28

Behind Lavon Chaney's four touchdowns and a strong defensive effort, South River defeated Broadneck, 42-28.

South River coach Lance Clelland spoke about believing in evidence, evidence that his team can play with any team in the county. The Seahawks now have some evidence. Behind 178 rushing yards and four touchdowns from junior running back Lavon Chaney, South River (2-1) defeated Broadneck (1-2), 42-28, on Friday. "We're getting better every week and that's what I pride myself on and my coaching staff prides ourselves on," Clelland said. South River forced three turnovers by the Bruins, recovering two fumbles and intercepting one pass, never letting the visitors get comfortable on offense. Chaney countered Darnell Soloman's early touchdown catch for the Bruins with touchdown runs of 12 yards and four yards to give the Seahawks a 14-7 lead …

Seahawks Soccer Swept By Broadneck

The Lady Seahawks fell, 2-1, in sudden death extra time. The South River boys conceded two second-half goals to lose 2-0 to Broadneck. South River hosts North County High School on Tuesday.

GIRLS - The South River girl's soccer team (1-1) dropped a tough decision on Thursday, falling 2-1 to Broadneck (2-0) in extra time. Trailing going into the later stages of the game, the host Seahawks were given new life when junior Dannie Stith struck a 25-yard shot into the net to tie the game at one. Broadneck's Arden Smith would steal the show in extra time with a similar strike. The first extra-time period was nearing completion when Smith's right-footed blast from atop the box sealed the win for the visiting Bruins. "Those are two sophomores that scored goals and we're very happy about that," Broadneck coach John Camm said. Smith and Broadneck's first goal scorer, Emily Barton, are both just sophomores. The Seahawks controlled early …
