The event will serve as entertainment for the public while providing additional funding for the band's competition trip to South Carolina in the spring.
As someone who played tenor saxophone for 12 years, I know how hard it is to play an instrument for hours on end. So when I heard about South River High’s concert band’s 9-hour “Play-A-Thon,” my jaw dropped. Starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, about 100 South River students and 35 adult volunteers will participate in a musical marathon for a special one-time concert/educational experience—ultimately culminating into a one-hour show from 4-5 p.m. Hosted by the South River Music Boosters, family members, residents who pledged financially and other guests are invited to volunteer throughout the day and as the young musicians gain extra training and instruction. Additionally, the Play-A-Thon will help raise funds for the school’s competition trip …

Next week nearly 10,000 students from Edgewater, Davidsonville and south county will hop on 227 buses as they head back to Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS). During the event, participants hosted table-side trinkets to raise additional money for the American Cancer Society, and also walked around the makeshift "track" inside South River High. The event was supposed to be outside, but due to rain and a nasty evening forecast it was moved indoors, according to organizer and South River High teacher Wes Baker. Baker, his planning team and volunteers had to move all of their decorations and tables from …
