The South River baseball team defeated North County 5-2 Friday night and advances to the state semifinals on Tuesday afternoon. The No. 4 Seahawks will face No. 2 Eleanor Roosevelt High School in the state semifinals at the University of Maryland at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. South River easily handled No. 3 North County Friday night in the 4A east region final. Brody Raimondo went 4-4 at the plate as South River overcame a shaky start to secure a 5-2 victory over North County in seven innings. Prince George’s County team Eleanor Roosevelt topped the No. 1-seeded Bowie High School 6-4 to advance to the state semifinals. The South River and Arundel baseball teams are each one win away from facing one another in the MPSSAA Class 4A baseball tournament. South River will host Broadneck Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a third-round game in Edgewater. Meanwhile, Arundel hosts North County in Gambrills at 5 p.m. If Arundel and South River each win, they would play each other for the regional title. Arundel is the No. 2 seed in the east region and reached the state title game last year. The Wildcats advanced in the playoffs Monday by holding off Old Mill for a 1-0 win. South River is seeded fourth and advanced by beating Chesapeake, 7-0.

MILLERSVILLE - South River pitcher Craig Sheridan remembered playing Old Mill in the playoffs last year, and recalled that it did not go well. On Wednesday, he came ready. “A kid parked one, and I kinda remembered that,” he said of last year's 9-1 season-ending loss. “They’re a good hitting team and attack the ball pretty hard. Today, I figured keep it down, move the ball a lot, change speeds and I figured we’d catch them off guard and get a lot of ground balls.” The strategy worked, as Sheridan pitched six strong innings and the Seahawks (8-3 in the county) topped Old Mill 5-1. Boys Lacrosse The boys lacrosse team easily handled Chesapeake High School 10-3 Tuesday night in Edgewater. The Seahawks were led by Brandon Senft’s four-goal performance, while Matt Gaskins and Ben Chisolm each added a pair. South River goalie Jake Gavin had 12 saves in the victory. With the win over the Cougars, South River improved to 5-2 on the season. The Seahawks will host Old Mill on Friday at 7 p.m. The Arundel boys moved to 7-0 with a convincing 15-5 win over Southern.
