South River Edges Arundel to Win Soccer Regional

South River overcame a two-goal deficit and topped Arundel, 3-2 in double overtime.

The South River High girls soccer team won the Class 4A East regional title Tuesday night, overcoming a 2-0 halftime deficit to beat Arundel High, 3-2.  The game was won by Maddie Koenig on a penalty kick in the second overtime, sending the Seahawks on to the state final four. Arundel took an early lead on goals by Clarissa Kirsch-Downs and Allison Shaner. But Kacie Longo scored two late goals in regulation, and Koenig secured the win for South River in the second extra period. South River will now play Bowie in the state semifinal. The game is scheduled for Saturday at noon at Richard Montgomery High School.  Check out Patch's gallery of photos from Todd Breese, and also read the account of the game in the Arundel Voice.
