Crofton Middle Schooler Wins Essay Award

Mariessa McKenna won first prize in the VFW's Patriot's Pen program, for her essay on "What I Would Tell America's Founding Fathers."

An eighth grader at Crofton Middle School recently won a national essay contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  Mariessa McKenna, age 13, won a $5,000 scholarship for her essay on the theme: "What I Would Tell America's Founding Fathers." According to an announcement, McKenna wrote, "I would tell them the stories of Americans, most of whom will not be born until decades later, who will come to embody the American spirit" born when the Declaration of Independence was signed. She went on to explain how she'd tell the founding fathers about Americans such as Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Buzz Aldrin. "Though they may not believe me, I would tell them that while some of the delegates sitting in that room may see them…

Watch Crofton Middle Students in 'The Music Man'

The show will run Friday and Saturday at Crofton Middle School.

The Music Man opened at Crofton Middle School on March 8 and will run its final two performances on Friday and Saturday at the school. The show features around 110 Crofton Middle students and tells the story of a slick salesman, Harold Hill, played by Timmy Kandra. In honor of the production, Patch has run a series of interviews with members of the cast leading up to its final weekend. Each student talked about their favorite parts of the show and why you shouldn't miss it. In case you need a little more convincing, a video sneak-peak of the show was posted on YouTube. This clip features a medley of songs performed in the show. The Music Man will be performed Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. at Crofton Middle. Those interested in purchasing …
